Alphabet Inc. is Google’s parent company, and Google remains its largest business. Alphabet was formed in a 2015 restructuring so Google’s core products could sit alongside businesses pursuing longer-term opportunities. Today, Alphabet reports Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets as its three main operating segments; advertising remains central to its business, while cloud and AI are important areas of investment and expansion.
This guide uses Alphabet’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 5, 2026, for company and risk information. It avoids treating older quarterly figures as current results. SEC filing record
1. Alphabet is the parent; Google is its largest business
Alphabet Inc. is the publicly traded parent corporation. Google is its largest business within that structure. Google’s familiar products and services—including Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Maps, Google Play, advertising and Google Cloud—are generally part of Google, not separate Alphabet reporting segments.
So Alphabet did not replace Google. Google continues to operate inside the larger parent company, alongside non-Google businesses. The distinction is useful when discussing the corporation as a whole versus the products most people use. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K describes the structure and businesses.
#1 Best Overall
- Desktop organizer with pen holder, pullout drawer, and other compartments
- Ideal for use in offices, workspaces, businesses, and homes
- Durable commercial-grade steel construction
- Stylish mesh surface that promotes airflow and helps prevent dust build-up
- Scratch- and chip-resistant powder-coated finish
2. The restructuring was meant to give different businesses room to operate
Google announced the Alphabet restructuring in August 2015; it became effective on October 2, 2015. The founders’ stated rationale was to keep Google’s internet products together while allowing businesses less directly connected to those products to have more independent leadership and clearer accountability. They also presented the structure as a way to preserve room for long-term, higher-risk investments.
That rationale explains the design, but it does not mean every venture became an independent company or that every project is managed wholly apart from Google. Alphabet and Google still share leadership, resources and strategic priorities. The founders’ 2015 letter explains the original plan.
3. Sundar Pichai leads both Alphabet and Google
Sundar Pichai is CEO of Alphabet and Google. Larry Page was Alphabet’s first CEO when the restructuring took effect, with Sergey Brin serving as president; Pichai succeeded Page as Alphabet CEO in 2019. The parent-and-subsidiary structure therefore does not mean the two organizations have separate top executives. The 2025 Form 10-K identifies Pichai’s roles.

4. Alphabet reports three main operating segments
These segments are financial reporting categories, not a complete map of every subsidiary or product. Alphabet also reports some shared research, corporate costs and other items at the Alphabet level rather than assigning them entirely to one segment.

Other Bets is a reporting category containing businesses that are not individually reported as operating segments; it is not one unified company. For definitions and examples, see Alphabet’s investor FAQs.
5. Advertising remains central to the business model
Alphabet is not principally a hardware or subscription company. Google Services earns advertising revenue from Search and other Google-owned properties, YouTube, and its wider advertising network. It also earns money from YouTube and other consumer subscriptions, app sales and in-app purchases, and devices.

Many widely used Google products do not charge users directly. Their place in the larger business is supported by advertising and by paid services elsewhere in the ecosystem. That does not mean Google simply sells users’ personal data: that shorthand obscures the advertising model, in which advertisers pay for ads and related capabilities rather than a straightforward sale of personal data. The 2025 Form 10-K and investor FAQs describe the revenue categories.
6. Google Cloud gives Alphabet a larger role in business technology
Google Cloud sells technology to organizations, expanding Alphabet’s exposure beyond consumer products and advertising. Google Cloud Platform provides computing, storage, databases, analytics, AI infrastructure and developer services. Google Workspace is a separate part of the segment, offering productivity and collaboration tools such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Meet to organizations.

Cloud revenue combines usage-based charges with subscriptions. Its AI infrastructure and services also give Alphabet a commercial route to sell AI tools to enterprise customers. The opportunity comes with competition from large cloud providers and the need to invest in computing capacity. Segment descriptions are available in Alphabet’s investor FAQs.

7. AI is a company-wide strategy, not a reported segment
Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company has been “AI-first” since 2016. AI affects Search and advertising, YouTube recommendations and tools, Android and devices, Google Cloud, and products such as Gemini. Shared AI research and development also appears among Alphabet-level activities; Alphabet’s reported operating segments remain Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets.
The opportunity is not guaranteed profit. AI can support new products and Cloud demand, but it also requires substantial computing resources, data centers, networking, specialized hardware, research and staff. Alphabet reports broader infrastructure, research and capital spending rather than a single clean figure for “AI spending,” so AI investment should not be mistaken for a separately measured revenue stream. The 2025 Form 10-K discusses its AI strategy and related risks.

Alphabet’s examples include Waymo (autonomous driving and ride-hailing), Verily (health-related technology and services), Calico (aging research), Wing (drone delivery), X (breakthrough-technology projects), Google Fiber (internet services), and the investment businesses GV and CapitalG. These are not all the same kind of operation: some develop or sell services, while GV and CapitalG invest in other companies.

Waymo illustrates why “moonshot” is too broad a label for the whole category: Alphabet’s filing describes it as having moved into paid autonomous ride-hailing in multiple cities. That commercial activity does not establish that Waymo, or Other Bets overall, is profitable. Alphabet says these businesses can range from research and development to commercialization, and reports them together as Other Bets. The Form 10-K and investor FAQs provide the company’s descriptions.
9. Alphabet’s share classes have unequal voting rights
Alphabet has three publicly described share classes with different voting rights:
- Class A: one vote per share.
- Class B: ten votes per share; these shares are generally held by insiders and founders.
- Class C: no voting rights.
The classes provide broadly similar economic exposure, but not equal influence over corporate decisions. A public investor should distinguish owning an economic interest from having voting power proportional to that interest. For current governance and ownership details, consult the 2026 proxy filing; historical founder ownership figures should not be treated as current.
10. Scale does not remove business or investment risk
Alphabet’s risks affect the business in different ways; they should not be collapsed into a single prediction about the company or its stock.

- Investment and competition: AI infrastructure can require substantial spending, while Google Cloud competes with well-capitalized rivals. The returns on that investment are uncertain.
- Advertising exposure: Ad demand can respond to economic conditions, privacy changes and shifts in platforms or user behavior.
- Regulation and legal exposure: Antitrust and other regulatory actions, along with privacy, platform and content issues, can affect products and operations.
- Venture uncertainty: Other Bets may need funding for years before generating meaningful returns; individual ventures may not succeed.
- Governance and operational complexity: Dual-class voting limits outside shareholder influence, while the scale of Google’s ecosystem creates legal, cybersecurity and operational exposure. Acquisitions and partnerships also carry integration and regulatory risks.
These are risks to performance, strategy and shareholder influence—not proof of any particular investment outcome. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K sets out the company’s risk factors. For reported results beyond that full-year filing, use Alphabet’s earnings page and the relevant period’s release.
