You cannot currently buy or use Amazon Coins. Amazon Coins were a restricted virtual currency for eligible apps, games, and in-app purchases through the Amazon Appstore. Amazon stopped selling them on February 20, 2025, and discontinued the program in all marketplaces on August 20, 2025. They were not general Amazon shopping credit, cash, or cryptocurrency.
What were Amazon Coins?
Amazon Coins were an Amazon-controlled virtual currency introduced in 2013 for digital purchases. Historically, customers could use them to pay for eligible apps, games, and in-app items sold through the Amazon Appstore. Amazon’s original announcement described Coins as a way to purchase apps, games, and in-app items on Kindle Fire devices (Amazon’s launch announcement).

Coins were linked to an Amazon account rather than represented by physical tokens. They had no public blockchain, independent exchange rate, or peer-to-peer transfer system. Calling them “Amazon’s cryptocurrency” is inaccurate.
How much was an Amazon Coin worth?
In the U.S. marketplace, one Amazon Coin represented $0.01 of eligible Appstore spending value. Therefore:

| 1,000 | $10 |

This conversion was marketplace-specific. Coin denominations and currency values could differ in other countries. Even in the U.S., the value applied only to eligible Amazon Appstore purchases—not ordinary Amazon.com orders. Historical customer-support guidance documented the U.S. conversion (Amazon support guidance).
How Amazon Coins worked historically
Buying Coin bundles
Before the program ended, customers could purchase Coin bundles through the Amazon website, the Amazon Appstore, and supported Fire and Android devices. Larger bundles were often sold below their face value. Amazon advertised discounts of up to 10%, although the exact discount depended on the bundle and promotion (Amazon’s 2014 announcement).
The saving came from buying Coins at a discount; the app or game itself was not necessarily discounted. The arrangement was useful only if the customer eventually spent the Coins on eligible content. Buying more than needed could leave a restricted balance stranded—particularly once Amazon announced the program’s closure.

Earning promotional Coins
Amazon also offered promotional ways to earn Coins in selected markets and at selected times. Examples included downloading certain apps, completing achievements in participating games, and joining specific app or game promotions. These opportunities were never universal and varied by country, account, title, and date. Old claims about “free Coins” generally describe historical promotions, not current offers.
Spending Coins
Historically, a customer would open an eligible app, game, or in-app item in the Amazon Appstore, start the purchase, choose Amazon Coins when that payment option appeared, and confirm the transaction. The purchase normally had to be covered by the available Coin balance; historical support guidance indicated that Coins generally could not be combined with another payment method for one transaction.
Coin payment options appeared only for eligible content. A balance was associated with the Amazon Appstore version of an app or game, not automatically with the same title downloaded from Google Play or another store.

Checking the balance
Historical balance locations included the Amazon Coins purchase page, the Coins Account page, the Amazon Appstore on Android, and the Amazon Appstore Library on Fire tablets. These paths are historical and should not be expected to function in 2026.

What could Amazon Coins buy?
| Could be eligible historically | Could not generally be used for |
|---|---|
| Paid Amazon Appstore apps | Physical products on Amazon.com |
| Amazon Appstore games | Google Play purchases |
| Eligible in-app items | Nonparticipating apps or items |
| Selected game content | Some subscriptions |
| Other eligible Appstore digital content | Cash withdrawals or conversion to ordinary money |
“In-app purchase” did not mean every purchase inside every app qualified. The app had to be using the Amazon Appstore billing system and the specific item had to accept Coins.
Can you still buy or use Amazon Coins?
No. Amazon ended Coin purchases on February 20, 2025. Existing Coins could be spent only until August 20, 2025, when Amazon discontinued the program in all marketplaces. As of 2026, there is no current purchase or redemption procedure.

Old product pages, search results, cached articles, and screenshots may still show Coin bundles or historical menu paths. They do not override Amazon’s discontinuation notice (Amazon’s official 2025 announcement). Treat websites offering Coins after the end date as outdated or potentially fraudulent.

Amazon ended support for the Amazon Appstore on Android mobile devices on August 20, 2025. That does not mean Amazon shut down the Appstore everywhere. Amazon’s announcement treated Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Fire TV built-in products separately and continued Appstore support on those platforms.

What to do if you still see an old Coins balance
An old account record or balance display does not mean the balance remains spendable. For a disputed transaction or historical balance:
- Review the Amazon account’s digital-order and payment history.
- Record the marketplace, approximate purchase date, Coin quantity, and transaction ID.
- Contact Amazon customer service through the account associated with the purchase.
- Ask specifically about the historical Amazon Coins transaction, not general gift-card credit.
- Do not give your Amazon credentials to a site claiming to restore, convert, or sell Coins.
Amazon’s discontinuation announcement confirms the spending deadline but does not, in the cited material, provide a detailed public refund process for every unused balance. Do not assume an automatic refund or guaranteed conversion; customer service must address any account-specific dispute.
Amazon Coins versus other Amazon credits
| Product or reward | What it was for |
|---|---|
| Amazon Coins | Eligible Amazon Appstore apps, games, and in-app items; now discontinued |
| Amazon gift-card balance | A separate Amazon payment balance for eligible Amazon purchases |
| Amazon promotional credit | A promotional discount or credit governed by its own terms |
| Amazon Shopper Panel rewards | Separate rewards, such as Amazon Balance or charitable-donation rewards, for eligible activities |
Amazon Coins were not transferable into gift-card balance, and they were not the same as Amazon Balance or Amazon Shopper Panel rewards. See the Amazon Shopper Panel rewards FAQ for that separate program.
