Amazon says hiring processes vary by role: online applications, assessments, phone screens, and interview loops are common components, not steps every applicant will necessarily encounter.
Start with the job posting, not a one-size-fits-all formula
Search Amazon’s careers site for a current opening that matches your experience. Read the responsibilities, basic qualifications, location, employment category, schedule, and application instructions before applying. The vacancy and any instructions in your application portal or from a recruiter are the best guide to what happens next.
Amazon’s hiring overview describes online application, assessments, phone screening, and an interview loop as common parts of the process, but the sequence and stages differ by role. Do not assume that every candidate will complete all four.
Tailor your application to the vacancy
Make your resume relevant to the responsibilities and qualifications in the specific listing. Emphasize accurate, concrete examples of work that show the skills the role calls for. Amazon’s general hiring guidance does not prescribe a universal resume format or promise that a particular resume technique will secure an interview or offer.

Compare openings before you apply
If you are considering more than one role, check the details that can materially change the job and hiring process:
- Responsibilities and qualifications: Confirm that your experience matches what each listing asks for.
- Location and work arrangement: Use the listing to determine where the job is based and whether it specifies remote, on-site, or another arrangement.
- Assessment and interview requirements: Look for role-specific preparation guidance and follow the instructions attached to your application.
- Employment category and schedule: Check whether the opening is hourly or another employment type, and review any stated schedule.
- Benefits: Verify eligibility for the job and location rather than assuming one package applies across Amazon.
Prepare for the assessment and interview your role requires
Amazon publishes different preparation guidance for different job families. For example, its Business Intelligence Engineer (BIE) page describes an online assessment with SQL and work-style components, a possible technical phone screen, and a five-interview loop. Its Software Development Engineer II (SDE II) page describes an assessment with coding and systems-design elements and a four-interview loop. These are examples for those role families, not a company-wide template or guarantee.
Rank #2
| Role example | Published preparation details | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Business Intelligence Engineer (BIE) | Online assessment with SQL and work-style components; possible technical phone screen; five-interview loop. | Review the BIE guidance and prepare for the skills it names. The steps are specific to this role example. |
| Software Development Engineer II (SDE II) | Assessment with coding and systems-design elements; four-interview loop. | Use the SDE II guidance to direct technical practice. Do not assume its assessment or loop applies to other roles. |
| Software Development Manager (SDM) | The role guidance describes a distinct process that can include a phone screen and a writing assessment. | Check the SDM material and the vacancy for the requirements relevant to your application. |
For BIE preparation, Amazon’s guidance covers SQL, basic scripting, analytical problem solving, visualization, metrics and reporting, and business acumen. For SDE II, it discusses coding and systems design. Prepare for the skills named in your role’s materials and vacancy rather than relying on a generic technical-interview checklist.
Build behavioral answers from specific examples
Amazon says a significant portion of interviews focuses on how candidates have demonstrated its Leadership Principles in past work. Its guidance recommends recalling specific experiences, explaining what you did and why, and organizing answers with STAR: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. Include metrics or other evidence where applicable, and be ready to discuss risks, success, failure, and what you learned.

A practical preparation exercise
- List concrete examples from work or other relevant experience that show skills or judgment connected to the role.
- For each example, write down the situation and the task or challenge you were responsible for.
- Describe your own actions and reasoning clearly, distinguishing your contribution from the team’s.
- Record the result and supporting evidence, such as a relevant metric, if one is available.
- Prepare examples that show different outcomes, including a setback or lesson learned as well as a success.
This exercise follows Amazon’s published advice to prepare detailed STAR examples; it is not a formula that guarantees a successful interview.
Know what an interview loop means
Amazon’s Interview Loop guidance explains that interviewers meet candidates individually and assess different aspects of their skills and experience. Use its material on behavioral questions, STAR, interview-day preparation, and what happens after the interview to guide your planning. The number and format of interviews still depend on the specific role.

Amazon’s working at Amazon page links to information about teams, locations, job categories, hourly roles, military hiring, and university talent. These are useful starting points for finding the right kind of opening, but the vacancy itself determines the requirements for a particular job.
Benefits are not necessarily the same for every employee: Amazon says availability depends on factors including location, country, job status, and other requirements. Check the information for the relevant location and opening before making decisions based on benefits.

Follow the instructions for your application
Hiring stages and role details can change. Use the current job listing, application portal, recruiter communications, and the official preparation page for the role you have applied to. Amazon’s general process and its BIE, SDE II, and SDM examples are useful orientation, not promises about the timing or exact sequence of your application.
