People’s Union USA founder John Schwarz urged shoppers to pause Amazon purchases from March 7 through March 14, 2025. That deadline has passed. The call covered Amazon shopping and, in its broadest interpretation, services including Whole Foods, Prime Video, Zappos, Twitch, Alexa, Audible, Ring and IMDb. The sales figure sometimes associated with the campaign—Amazon sales up 1%—was for a separate, earlier one-day event, not this week-long boycott.
What did the Amazon boycott ask shoppers to do?
Schwarz, founder of People’s Union USA, asked supporters to stop buying from Amazon during a week-long action that began Friday, March 7, and ran until Friday, March 14, 2025. Yahoo News reported the appeal on March 10 and updated its story on March 11, 2025. The dates are historical; this was not an open-ended deadline.
The call focused on Amazon purchases. The reporting also described a broad scope that included Whole Foods, Prime Video, Zappos, Twitch, Alexa, Audible, Ring and IMDb. That list reflects the organizer’s requested reach, not evidence that every supporter stopped using each service.
Why did the organizer call for a boycott?
Schwarz said he was concerned about Amazon’s effects on small businesses, worker treatment and company profits. Those were his stated reasons for urging a shopping pause, not findings established by the sales data cited in news coverage.

What does the 1% Amazon sales figure mean?
Momentum Commerce analyzed sales data from its clients during a separate, one-day economic blackout on February 28, 2025. As reported by Yahoo News and Modern Retail, those client sales were up 1% compared with the average of the previous eight Fridays.

This comparison does not measure the March 7–14 Amazon boycott. It also does not establish Amazon’s total company-wide sales or show whether the earlier blackout caused a change. Momentum Commerce lead researcher Andrew Waber told CNET, as quoted by Yahoo News, “I’d say the minimal impact on Amazon sales during the one-day boycott isn’t necessarily surprising.” His comment referred to the February 28 event.
Schwarz told CNET by email, as quoted in the Yahoo News report, “Any type of drop in sales would be a success to us.” That expresses the organizer’s measure of success; it is not evidence that sales fell during the week-long action.

How many people participated?
The cited coverage does not give a reliable total participation figure for the March boycott. Yahoo News reported Schwarz’s account that he received “hundreds of messages,” but that is not a verified count of participants. Without a reliable participation estimate or sales data specific to March 7–14, the available reporting cannot establish the boycott’s overall effect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the boycott permanent?
No. The March 2025 call was a week-long action with a stated end date of March 14. People’s Union USA later listed Amazon on a permanent blackout list, but that is a subsequent organizational position, not a change to the dates of the March appeal. See the organization’s blackout list for its later position.
