Strella announced a $14 million Series A in October 2025, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, and identified Amazon and Chobani among the companies using its AI-moderated customer interviews. The round signals investor interest in automating parts of qualitative research; it does not independently prove Strella’s performance claims or establish what those customers did with its findings.
What Strella announced—and what the funding means
The October 2025 Series A was led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from Decibel Partners, MVP Ventures, Future Back Ventures by Bain & Company, and 645 Ventures. Strella said it would use the funding to expand product and engineering work, go-to-market efforts, and the business. The company described the round as coming about a year after its public launch. Strella’s announcement confirms the round and investor group.

VentureBeat reported total funding of $18 million, including a prior $4 million seed round. It also reported company figures including tenfold revenue growth, a quadrupling of the customer base, a tripling of average contract value, and more than 40 paying enterprise customers. These are reported company metrics, not independently audited financial results; the report used varying wording for the customer count, so it should not be treated as a precise, independently verified total.

Strella identifies Amazon, Chobani, Duolingo, and Apollo GraphQL as customers or enterprise users. The available announcements establish those customer relationships, not public endorsements, specific research outcomes, or decisions made using the platform.

How AI-moderated customer interviews work
Strella is designed to automate the operational steps between a research question and a set of evidence that a team can review. A team defines what it wants to learn, prepares a discussion guide, recruits participants, conducts interviews, and examines the resulting recordings, transcripts, and synthesized themes. Researchers can use Strella’s AI moderator or moderate sessions themselves, according to the company’s product materials.
- Set the research objective. For example, a product team might want to understand why mobile shoppers abandon checkout.
- Prepare the guide and participant criteria. The guide can be generated or refined for the study; researchers still need to decide what question is worth asking and whom to ask.
- Recruit participants. Strella says teams can bring their own participants or use its panel. Its current site markets access to up to 8 million global participants and research in more than 46 languages; these are first-party claims, not independent measures of panel quality or coverage.
- Conduct interviews. The AI moderator asks questions and can follow up in response to what a participant says. Sessions can be conducted on desktop or mobile, and the platform also supports survey-style question types.
- Review the evidence. Strella describes features for transcripts, clips, highlight reels, charts, and synthesized themes, as well as a searchable repository for later queries. Researchers should check that a summary is supported by the underlying participant evidence.
Strella markets studies for exploratory research, concept testing, customer journeys, usability, and mobile testing. It is a real-participant research product, not a generator of synthetic customer opinions. The founders told VentureBeat that Strella had considered synthetic respondents, sometimes called digital twins, before choosing to focus on interviews with real people.
How an adaptive interview differs from a survey
A standard survey generally presents a fixed sequence of questions and answer choices. An AI-moderated interview is intended to be more conversational: when a participant mentions confusion or a particular experience, the system can ask a follow-up rather than moving mechanically to the next item. That can surface context and participants’ own language, while structured questions within the same session can collect more standardized responses.

The trade-off is comparability. If participants receive different follow-ups, their answers may be richer but less directly comparable. Adaptive questioning also does not fix a poor research question, biased wording, an unrepresentative sample, or the difference between a participant’s explanation and the cause of their behavior. For decisions that require population estimates, a properly designed quantitative survey may be more appropriate than a set of interviews.
Why large companies might use it
Qualitative research takes time: teams must recruit and schedule people, conduct sessions, transcribe recordings, code responses, synthesize findings, and share them with decision-makers. Automating some of that work could let researchers run more studies or hear from customers sooner, particularly when scheduling live interviews is a bottleneck. Strella says interviews can run at scale and insights can arrive within hours or days; its reported time and cost savings should be treated as company claims rather than guaranteed results.
For a mobile checkout study, a participant’s description—“I couldn’t find the payment button”—may not explain the problem. VentureBeat reported that Strella’s mobile app supports persistent screen sharing during an interview. Watching where someone taps, pauses, or leaves the flow can give a research team evidence that a verbal account alone cannot provide. The founders’ claims about how this capability compares with competitors are not independently established by the available reporting.

Strella says its platform averages about 90% time savings and advertises 70% cost savings versus a focus group. VentureBeat also reported company claims that 60- to 90-minute interviews achieved completion rates close to 100%. Those figures do not establish that every study will save the same amount, that participants remain equally attentive throughout a long session, or that human review is unnecessary.

Strella’s founders and some customer comments reported by VentureBeat suggest that participants may feel more comfortable criticizing a product when speaking with an AI than with a person. That is a plausible product thesis, not a universal finding. Candor can vary with the participant, topic, culture, accessibility needs, and whether people believe their camera or voice is being recorded.
A participant may be frank yet still be mistaken, unrepresentative, or influenced by the way a question is framed. An AI moderator can also misunderstand an answer, introduce a leading prompt, or sound empathetic without actually understanding the participant. Researchers should treat “more honest” as a hypothesis to test against the study’s goals, not as a substitute for careful sampling and interpretation.

Fraud signals and research-quality limits
VentureBeat reported that Strella uses camera-based interviews and AI signals to flag behavior that could indicate fraud, such as suspicious pauses or possible consultation of another AI system. A flag is a reason to review a session, not proof of misconduct. Pauses can also reflect connectivity problems, translation, accessibility needs, or ordinary thinking time.
Fraud detection is only one part of participant quality. Buyers should separately ask how the platform handles identity checks, duplicate participation, incentives, professional survey takers, and replacement of low-quality sessions. They should also make sure participants understand what is recorded and how the data may be used.

What the Series A says about the research-software market
The investment reflects interest in tools that could reduce the time and labor involved in qualitative research. Strella’s longer-term pitch is not only an AI moderator: the company argues that a searchable archive of real customer interviews and insights could become valuable to an organization over time. That value would depend on the quality of the participants and interviews, the ability to trace summaries back to evidence, sound data governance, and fit with the company’s existing research workflows—not simply access to a language model.

Lowering the effort required to run a study may help teams ask more questions, rather than simply replace existing research. It may also increase the volume of material researchers need to review. AI can scale a poorly framed study just as efficiently as a good one, and automated summaries can underplay minority views or disagreement if a team does not inspect outliers and source material.
How to assess Strella before buying
Strella’s official sales page directs prospective customers to request a 30-minute demo and does not list public pricing on the reviewed page. A sales-led buying path makes a scoped pilot especially useful: compare the platform with the method or tool your team already uses, and assess the total cost rather than software alone. Strella’s demo page is the published buying route.
- Interview quality: Can researchers edit or constrain the guide, inspect follow-up questions, and trace each synthesized insight to the transcript or recording?
- Participants: Can you use your own customers? What demographic, geographic, behavioral, and language filters are available, and how are identity, duplicates, and poor-quality sessions handled?
- Workflow: Does the product support the specific study you need? Can a human moderator take over? Can you export transcripts, clips, and raw data, and connect the output to your research repository or collaboration tools?
- Privacy and governance: Ask where recordings and transcripts are stored, how long they are retained, whether customer data train shared models, and what consent, deletion, access-control, regional-storage, and security terms apply.
- Economics and validation: Include participant incentives, recruitment, research-operations time, and human quality review. Have trained researchers independently code a sample of sessions and compare their findings with the AI synthesis.
A practical pilot uses the same research brief and comparable participants across Strella and one alternative. Compare the depth and relevance of follow-ups, completion quality, time to usable insight, evidence traceability, and the handling of questionable sessions. Treat the company’s reported time and cost savings as hypotheses for that pilot to test.

When a different tool or method may fit better
Strella is positioned around AI-moderated qualitative interviews with real participants. That makes it less obviously suited to every research need.
- For statistically representative estimates: use a quantitative survey designed for the target population rather than relying on interviews as a substitute.
- For broad experience-management and survey programs: Qualtrics describes a wider platform for surveys and experience management; its pricing page uses a request-pricing model. Qualtrics pricing.
- For usability tests, prototype tests, or human-led video feedback: UserTesting offers a range of testing and conversation workflows, with test-based or team plans and customized enterprise pricing. UserTesting plans.

- For a research repository and synthesis layer: Dovetail is more repository-oriented than an end-to-end participant-interview service, and may be relevant alongside an interview platform if the team can move evidence between them. Dovetail pricing.
Teams subject to strict regulatory controls, with ample human-moderation capacity, or seeking transparent self-serve pricing should verify fit particularly carefully. For a high-stakes product, brand, or compliance decision, AI-generated themes should inform—not replace—researcher review.
