What merchandise did the Florida GOP sell?
The party’s July 1, 2025 announcement promoted thousands of “Alligator Alcatraz”-themed shirts, hats and other gear through its official storefront. The party’s statement that it sold thousands was its own claim. Republican Party of Florida announcement

Power gave two figures in separate reports, at different points in the sales timeline. They should not be read as competing estimates for the same period.

Why was the merchandise controversial?
The merchandise borrowed its name from a Florida Everglades immigration detention facility. The Florida GOP presented the design as a way to promote its immigration-enforcement message. Power told WUSF that the party’s base was energized by the idea of deportations and tighter immigration control, and described the name and “vibe” as fun. WUSF interview with Evan Power

Florida Democratic Party chair Nikki Fried criticized the sales, saying it was shameful to sell merchandise associated with suffering.
