That means shoppers looking to try on Allbirds shoes in person no longer had an Allbirds store in San Francisco after the closure. The sources documenting the closure do not identify a current local retailer where shoppers can try the brand.
Why did Allbirds close its San Francisco store?
The Hayes Valley closure came as Allbirds moved to close its remaining full-price U.S. stores by the end of February 2026. In a Jan. 28, 2026, SEC filing, the company said it would continue operating two U.S. outlet stores and two full-price stores in London at that time. Those were exceptions stated in the closure announcement, not a verified current store list: Allbirds’ Jan. 28 Form 8-K.

Allbirds said it wanted to redirect resources toward e-commerce, wholesale partnerships and international distributorships, while reducing costs. Then-CEO Joe Vernachio described the move as part of the company’s turnaround strategy, saying, “This is an important step for Allbirds, as we drive toward profitable growth under our turnaround strategy.” The company’s stated rationale does not establish whether the plan achieved those aims. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Jan. 28, 2026, report also placed the closure in the context of a shrinking retail footprint.
How the U.S. store footprint had narrowed
According to the Chronicle’s 2026 account of Allbirds’ earnings reports, the company had more than 60 stores worldwide, including 45 in the United States, in 2023. It closed 14 U.S. stores in 2024 and nine more in the first half of 2025. These are historical counts, not a current store directory.

The available closure announcements do not establish which Allbirds stores, if any, are open today. What changed after the store closures?
Allbirds’ footwear business later changed ownership, a separate development from the San Francisco store closure. Allbirds, Inc. reported that the sale of its footwear assets to Allbirds IP LLC, an affiliate of American Exchange Group, closed on June 9, 2026. The SEC filing gives adjusted cash consideration at closing as $40.7 million: Allbirds’ June 9 Form 8-K. The filing describes a transfer of footwear assets; it does not establish the current operating status of any retail store.
