Card linking requires issuer verification, so keep another payment method available. Fees, limits, and available features can vary by account and payment product.
How to set up Alipay with a foreign bank card
- Download Alipay and register. Use a foreign or Chinese mobile number and follow the prompts in the app. Official visitor guidance describes registration with either type of number.
- Try to add your card. In the app, select the option to add a bank card and enter the requested details. The card issuer must verify it; a card that appears eligible may still be declined.
- Check card and account terms if binding fails. Network availability is not a guarantee of approval, and support can vary by product, market, and issuer. Check the card-binding flow in Alipay and your issuer’s rules for overseas use. If verification fails, contact Alipay customer service or the issuing bank.
Shanghai’s 2026 guide says international visitors can link eligible cards issued outside mainland China without opening a mainland bank account. An official guide lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, and Discover across the payment products it references; that does not mean every network or individual card is accepted by Alipay in every market. Shanghai Municipal Government guidance and Shenzhen payment guidance describe the product-specific qualifications.
How to pay a merchant
Alipay supports two QR-code methods for merchant payments:
- Scan the merchant’s code: Scan the merchant’s collection QR code in the app and follow the payment prompts.
- Show your payment code: Display your payment QR code in Alipay so the merchant can scan it.
Check the amount and any fee shown in the app before confirming. Merchant acceptance of overseas cards and payment products varies, so a QR payment option at one business does not establish that every business will accept your account or card.

Fees and limits for linked overseas cards
Shanghai’s municipal guidance, published in 2026, gives the following figures for overseas cards linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay. The page also advises users to check the app for limits applicable to their individual accounts.
| Item | What the Shanghai guide says |
|---|---|
| Single-transaction limit | Up to US$5,000 |
| Annual cumulative limit | Up to US$50,000 |
| Platform fee | Transactions of RMB200 or less are generally exempt. A transaction above RMB200 may incur a fee of 3% of the full transaction amount. |
These are the limits and fee terms in Shanghai’s published guidance, not a promise that every account will have the same settings or fee treatment. Confirm the applicable limit, fee, and any promotion on the payment screen before you approve a transaction. The platform fee is separate from any charges or exchange-rate treatment applied by your card issuer.

What you can and cannot do with an overseas card
Shenzhen’s official guide says an overseas bank card linked to Alipay supports everyday purchases, but not person-to-person transfers, sending or receiving red packets, wealth management, insurance, or other financial services. The same guide says the overseas card issuer supplies the exchange rate for Alipay transactions. Check your statement and ask the issuer about its exchange rate and any issuer-side fees. Shenzhen’s payment guide sets out these restrictions.
Using Alipay for metro, bus, or a taxi
Transit features depend on the city and app version. The national foreign visitor guide describes this general route for public transport:
Rank #3
- Open Alipay’s Transport area.
- Choose the city.
- Complete the requested identity verification.
- Use the transit QR code the app provides where that service is supported.
Alipay also has a taxi-booking option in its Transport or Taxi section. Exact steps and availability can differ by location. The national visitor guide describes these travel uses; check the app for the city-specific option.

Alipay is one way to pay, not a universal solution. Depending on the merchant and location, you may also be able to pay directly with a foreign bank card, use another payment app or a supported home-market e-wallet, or pay in RMB cash. For direct card payments, look for your network’s logo and confirm acceptance with the merchant. Cash can be obtained at exchange counters or compatible ATMs. Because acceptance and terms differ, carry a backup rather than relying on one method.
