Alien: Romulus opened with an estimated $109.9 million worldwide over August 16–18, 2024, according to The Walt Disney Company. That opening-weekend estimate is not the film’s eventual box-office total: Box Office Mojo currently lists its worldwide lifetime gross at $350,865,342.
What was Alien: Romulus’s global debut?
Disney’s August 18, 2024 report put the film’s estimated worldwide opening at $109.9 million, including an estimated $41.8 million in the domestic market. Disney also said it opened at No. 1 domestically that weekend. The Walt Disney Company’s opening-weekend report is the source for those contemporaneous estimates.

Opening weekend versus lifetime box office
Opening weekend measures a film’s receipts during its initial release period; lifetime gross accumulates over its theatrical run. Box Office Mojo’s record, accessed October 4, 2026, lists Alien: Romulus at $350,865,342 worldwide: $105,313,091 domestic and $245,552,251 international. The same database lists its domestic opening at $42,003,361. These figures are database records and may be revised. Box Office Mojo’s title record provides the current totals.

The two domestic-opening amounts reflect different reporting states: Disney’s initial estimate and Box Office Mojo’s currently recorded amount. They are not interchangeable with the worldwide opening or lifetime gross.
How did the opening compare?
Disney characterized the $41.8 million domestic opening as the second-biggest domestic opening in the then-current Alien series and the biggest opening of director Fede Alvarez’s career. Disney UK Press separately described the global result as the franchise’s second-highest opening ever, in its August 19, 2024 release. Those are source-framed rankings from 2024, not a claim that the film had the franchise’s largest opening. Disney UK Press’s release reported a £3.74 million UK and Ireland opening and a 28% market share; that regional figure is not the worldwide total.

What the film is—and what its budget figures mean
Alien: Romulus is a science-fiction horror thriller about young space colonizers scavenging a derelict station and encountering a dangerous life form. The story takes place after Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien. Fede Alvarez directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues; the cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. 20th Century Studios’ film page lists a U.S. release date of August 16, 2024, an R rating, and a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes.
The Numbers lists an $80 million production budget. That is a database-reported production-budget figure, not a verified total for marketing and distribution costs, so it cannot by itself establish the film’s profit. The Numbers also records a home-video release date of October 15, 2024, without specifying the format or edition. The Numbers’ film record is the source for those entries.

Why the director called it a return to horror
In Disney’s August 18, 2024 report, Alvarez said, “the whole point of this movie was to take back Alien to the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie.” The quote describes the director’s stated creative intent, rather than an independent assessment of the film.
