Alexander McQueen Net Worth: What His Estate Was Reported to Be

Alexander McQueen’s estate was reported at £16 million in 2011, but that historical figure is not a current estimate of his net worth or the fashion house’s value.

Alexander McQueen’s estate was reported at £16 million in 2011 coverage of his will. That is a historical reported estate value—not a verified estimate of his net worth today, and not a valuation of the continuing Alexander McQueen fashion house.

What was Alexander McQueen’s reported net worth?

The clearest figure in the available reporting is £16 million, described by The Guardian on July 26, 2011 as the value of McQueen’s fortune when details of his will became public. It is best understood as a reported estate figure from that period. The coverage does not provide a full accounting or an independently recalculated net-worth estimate.

The reports say most of the estate was placed in a trust for Sarabande, the charity McQueen established to support emerging artists and designers. The estate’s later investment performance and present value are not established by these reports, so the 2011 figure should not be treated as a current personal-wealth estimate.

What did reports say about his will?

British Vogue’s July 27, 2011 account described bequests to family, household staff, charities and McQueen’s dogs, alongside the larger Sarabande trust. It reported the following terms:

  • £250,000 for each of his three sisters and two brothers.
  • £50,000 for each of his two housekeepers.
  • £50,000 for his godson and each niece and nephew.
  • £50,000 held in trust for his dogs.
  • £100,000 each for the Blue Cross, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the London Buddhist Centre and the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Vogue also reported that McQueen wanted Sarabande to consider grants or bursaries for students at Central Saint Martins. These are reported terms of the will, not a complete inventory of assets, liabilities or distributions.

Is that the value of the Alexander McQueen fashion house?

No. McQueen’s personal estate and the fashion business are different assets. Kering’s official McQueen profile describes the continuing British luxury house, founded by Lee Alexander McQueen in 1992. It records Sarah Burton’s appointment in 2010 and the move to creative director Seán McGirr in 2024, but does not state a standalone financial valuation for the house.

A historical SEC filing describes the 2001 Gucci Group arrangement as giving Gucci Group a 51% stake and McQueen the remaining 49%. That documents the partnership at that time; it should not be read as the present ownership split. The filing is available at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

After McQueen’s death, Gucci Group publicly said it would continue the brand. In its February 18, 2010 announcement, then-president and CEO Robert Polet said, “I believe strongly in the Alexander McQueen brand and its future.” The statement confirms the company’s commitment at the time, not the brand’s current market value. What can—and can’t—the £16 million figure tell you?

Figure or subject What the evidence establishes
£16 million Reported in 2011 coverage as the value of McQueen’s estate or fortune at the time; not a present-day estimate. (The Guardian, July 26, 2011.)
Alexander McQueen fashion house Kering’s current house profile supplies company and leadership context, but no standalone valuation. (Kering.)
Current personal net worth No updated personal estimate or later estate valuation is established by the cited will coverage.

The distinction matters because the estate report concerns an individual’s assets at a particular time, while a fashion-house valuation would concern a continuing business. Those figures would need different evidence and cannot be inferred from one another.
