Palantir CEO Alex Karp was identified in published reports as the buyer of St. Benedict’s Monastery in Old Snowmass, Colorado. The reported sale price was $120 million. The purchase was not just of a monastery building: it included a 3,739-acre ranch and a complex of religious, residential, and agricultural properties.

What did Alex Karp buy in Colorado?

St. Benedict’s sits in the Capitol Creek Valley in Old Snowmass, about 30 minutes from Aspen. The Land Report put the property at 3,739 acres; The Colorado Sun described it as roughly 3,700 acres. Its buildings and land include:

  • A main monastery building of about 24,000 square feet.
  • A retreat center of roughly 6,000 square feet, along with houses and cabins.
  • Ranchland, irrigated meadows, and three creeks.
  • Senior water rights and a cemetery.

That mix makes the transaction a large land-and-property purchase as well as the sale of a former religious community. The Colorado Sun described the sale as one of the largest residential sales in Colorado history. Axios, citing the listing firm, called it the largest residential sale in Pitkin County history. Those descriptions refer to different geographic scopes and should not be read as a single statewide record claim.

How much did Karp pay?

Published reports put the sale price at $120 million. The Land Report said the purchase occurred on Dec. 15, 2025. The Colorado Sun reported that the property had originally been listed for $150 million, making the reported sale price $30 million below that asking price. That difference is between the reported listing and sale figures; it does not establish the buyer’s negotiating rationale or the property’s appraised value.

The buyer identification and transaction price were reported by The Colorado Sun and Axios, both citing the Wall Street Journal’s identification of Karp. The Denver Gazette reported that public records showed the transfer to an LLC, while media reports identified Karp as the buyer. The published reporting supports attributing the purchase to him, rather than treating the LLC record alone as proof of individual ownership.

What was St. Benedict’s Monastery?

Trappist monks founded St. Benedict’s in 1956. The community’s life centered on silence, prayer, and manual labor, including work on the ranch. The monastery began winding down in 2022, and a last public mass was scheduled for Jan. 11, 2026, according to reporting by The Colorado Sun and the Denver Gazette. The sale therefore came as the community’s monastic era was ending.

What are the reported plans for the property?

The Colorado Sun reported that listing broker Ken Mirr said the buyer planned to use the property as a home. Axios reported that the listing firm said the buyer was committed to preserving the property’s character, continuing its use as a working cattle ranch, and protecting wildlife habitat. These are reported intentions, not confirmation that the plans have been implemented. The cited accounts do not establish public access or completed conservation work.

Mirr told The Land Report, “We were truly looking for someone who appreciates it for what it is instead of wanting to put 30 houses on it.” That quotation describes the broker’s stated preference for a buyer; it does not by itself establish what will happen to the land.

What the sale does—and does not—tell readers

The reported $120 million price and the property’s acreage provide a sense of the transaction’s scale, but the sale price is not a published appraisal or a statistical measure of comparable properties. Nor do the reported plans prove a lasting change in land use. The strongest established account is that Karp was identified in published coverage as the buyer of a historic monastery-and-ranch complex as the monastic community was closing.
