A DAP is an independent decision-making body that determines certain development applications instead of the local government and/or the Western Australian Planning Commission; this was not a Council vote.
The official application material identifies an Aldi supermarket as the intended use. PerthNow’s February 6, 2025 report described the plans as including six smaller commercial tenancies, a rear laneway and semi-basement car parking. PerthNow put the project value at $12 million. That is the reported estimate, not a verified final construction cost.

The site is 90 Stirling Highway, Nedlands, on the former Captain Stirling Centre site. The approved application is for a commercial development with Aldi as its intended supermarket tenant; it should not be mistaken for an operating store.

Is the store open, or is there an opening date?
The approval record and reporting cited here do not establish a construction start or store opening date. Approval confirms the planning decision, not that building work has begun or that Aldi has announced an opening schedule.
How did the site reach this decision?
PerthNow reported that Aldi acquired the site in 2015, received demolition approval in 2018, and that the former centre was not cleared until late 2023. The report also described complaints about vandalism, vermin and antisocial behaviour while the centre was disused.

The official DAP application material says Aldi had received approval in 2018 for an earlier retail proposal, but that project was not built amid external market pressures. The 2025 application revisited the site in the context of later planning and development nearby.
What about the proposed path connection?
PerthNow reported that the approval recommendation included conditions, among them an agreement with the City concerning a possible path linking Dalkeith Road and Florence Road, with the applicant asked to pay for it. The City register confirms the approval, but the final condition wording is not stated in the register information available here, so the reported detail should not be treated as the definitive condition.

PerthNow’s contemporaneous report described a neighbouring Woolworths-led redevelopment at 80 Stirling Highway, known as Nedlands Square, as approved in 2024 and planned for retail and other commercial uses. That is nearby development context; it does not change the DAP’s separate February 2025 decision on the Aldi site.
