Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines’ Single Operating Certificate: What It Means for Passengers

Alaska and Hawaiian’s single operating certificate unified regulatory and operational oversight, but Hawaiian’s brand continued. The shared passenger booking system followed in April 2026.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines received a single FAA operating certificate on October 29, 2025, after integrating operational procedures and completing the required safety work. For passengers, that did not mean Hawaiian’s brand disappeared or every booking system changed that day. The shared reservation platform came later, on April 22, 2026; the two airlines continue to present separate brands.

What a single operating certificate means

Every U.S. airline operates under an FAA-issued certificate. When airlines merge, the FAA combines their operations under one certificate only after the carrier demonstrates it can operate safely. The FAA describes this as a six-phase process; the airlines continue operating separately under their own certificates while that work is underway. The FAA’s explanation of its role in airline mergers was published October 24, 2025.

Alaska announced on October 29, 2025 that it had received the certificate to operate alongside Hawaiian. The airlines said they had aligned training, policies, procedures and manuals. This was a regulatory and operational integration milestone—not, by itself, a change to a passenger’s fare, route, baggage allowance or booked seat. Alaska’s announcement described the brands as continuing separately.

What passengers could see, and when

At the certificate milestone

Operational communications and customer-facing flight information are not the same thing. At the time of the certificate announcement, Alaska said pilots and dispatchers used the shared AS call sign for behind-the-scenes communications with air traffic control, while Hawaiian flights still displayed the HA designator to customers. The airlines also said some Hawaiian flight numbers could change to avoid duplication. Alaska’s October 2025 announcement explained that distinction.

Later: a shared booking system

The reservation-system change was a separate step. In October 2025, Alaska said the transition was planned for April 22, 2026, and that previously booked flights and selected seats would remain unchanged by that transition notice. Alaska’s passenger guidance covered the planned technical milestone.

Alaska reported that Hawaiian moved to the shared Sabre passenger service system on April 22, 2026. The company said the platform connects reservation records, websites, apps, loyalty programs and airport kiosks, allowing guests to manage trips through one app with either airline’s visual theme. Alaska’s shared-system announcement describes the cutover.

Is Hawaiian Airlines still Hawaiian?

Yes. Hawaiian’s current passenger FAQ says the Hawaiian brand continues and describes flights as Alaska-operated Hawaiian Airlines flights, with Hawaiian branding on digital channels and at airports. It also says passenger-facing flight codes and numbers have been harmonized following the single certificate. The FAA certificate therefore did not erase the Hawaiian identity passengers encounter. Hawaiian’s brand FAQ provides its current description.

Do you need to change your reservation?

There is no universal instruction to rebook because of the certificate. The October 2025 transition notice said existing flights and selected seats would not change as a result of that planned booking-system cutover, but that notice is not a guarantee about every later schedule or itinerary. For a particular trip, check the current itinerary in the airline’s trip-management channel and follow any direct notification about your flight. The certificate alone does not establish that a fare, seat, route or baggage entitlement changed.

Where integration stood in September 2026

In a September 29, 2026 filing, Alaska Air Group reported that three of four major integration milestones were complete: one loyalty program, the single operating certificate and one passenger service system. The company said joint collective bargaining with represented workgroups was underway. That is the parent company’s status report, not an FAA assessment of labor integration. Alaska Air Group’s September 2026 update gives the reported status.
