China Eastern Airlines agreed on 25 March 2026 to buy 101 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft. The often-cited approximately US$15.802 billion figure is based on Airbus catalogue prices from January 2024—not the amount China Eastern says it will pay. The airline says Airbus granted substantial price concessions, but its filing does not disclose the final negotiated sum.
What does the $15.8 billion figure represent?
China Eastern’s filing puts the order’s catalogue price at approximately US$15.802 billion, using Airbus’s January 2024 catalogue prices. The company says that figure covers airframes and engines and is subject to adjustment under the delivery-related pricing mechanism. China Eastern’s 25 March 2026 transaction announcement describes the actual consideration as significantly lower after substantial price concessions; it does not publish the negotiated amount.
That distinction matters: US$15.8 billion is not a disclosed cash price or final contract payment. The transaction documents establish the catalogue-price reference and the company’s description of a lower consideration, but not the amount China Eastern will ultimately pay.
Which aircraft did China Eastern order?
The 101 aircraft belong to Airbus’s A320neo family. China Eastern’s Shanghai filing lists the A320neo, A321neo and A321XLR variants. The cited filings do not state how many aircraft are assigned to each subtype, so the order should not be described as 101 of any one model.
