Because “so far” depends on a specific date, this comparison uses the companies’ full-year results rather than an unspecified in-year snapshot.
How Airbus and Boeing compared in 2023
The figures below are reported by the manufacturers in their 2024 year-end releases. Deliveries count aircraft handed over to customers during the year; net orders reflect orders after cancellations or other adjustments under each company’s reporting. Backlog is the order book remaining at year-end, not a count of aircraft already delivered.

Airbus delivered 207 more aircraft than Boeing during 2023. Both manufacturers reported more net orders than deliveries. Airbus also reported 2,319 gross orders, distinct from its 2,094 net orders.
What the numbers say—and what they do not
Deliveries measure output
Deliveries are the clearest operational-output comparison in the companies’ year-end releases: the aircraft handed over during the period. Airbus said its 735 deliveries represented an 11% increase over 2022. Boeing delivered 528 commercial aircraft.

Net orders indicate demand, not completed sales
Airbus reported 2,094 net orders and Boeing reported 1,576. Net orders are not interchangeable with gross orders, and neither figure means the aircraft were delivered or that the full value of an order was recognized as revenue in 2023.
Backlog is not a like-for-like precision comparison
Airbus reported a year-end backlog of 8,598 aircraft. Boeing described its commercial-airplane backlog as more than 5,600. Since Boeing’s figure is lower-bounded rather than stated to the same precision as Airbus’s, the published numbers do not support an exact backlog-gap calculation. Backlog is a reported order book; it does not establish that every aircraft will ultimately be delivered.

Why “2023 so far” needs a cutoff date
“So far” can mean different things depending on when the question was asked. The full-year figures above answer who finished ahead in 2023; they are not a snapshot from an unspecified date during that year. The available interim figures are also from different reporting windows: Airbus reported 623 deliveries through November 2023, while Boeing’s second-quarter release reported 266 deliveries in the first half. Those figures should not be treated as a matched, same-date comparison.

No. Orders, deliveries, and backlog measure commercial activity, not aircraft safety. Boeing’s 2023 annual filing describes FAA actions announced after the January 5, 2024 Alaska Airlines 737-9 accident: the FAA notified Boeing on January 10 that it had opened an investigation into the company’s quality-control system, and on January 24 said it would not approve 737 MAX production-rate increases or additional production lines until satisfied that required quality-control procedures were being followed. These events occurred after the 2023 comparison period and do not provide a head-to-head safety assessment.
