Airbus Delays Hydrogen Plane Beyond Its 2035 Target: What We Know

Airbus’s original 2035 ambition for ZEROe has been delayed, and no replacement commercial-service date has been announced. Its latest updates describe technology work, not a new launch schedule.

Airbus no longer has a 2035 target for putting its ZEROe hydrogen aircraft into commercial service, and it has not announced a replacement date. Its March 2025 update described a technology-development roadmap and a notional fuel-cell aircraft concept—not a new launch schedule. A separate Airbus plan for a next-generation single-aisle aircraft in the second half of the 2030s is not a hydrogen-plane deadline.

When will Airbus’s hydrogen plane be ready?

There is no publicly announced replacement entry-into-service date for ZEROe in the cited Airbus updates. Airbus’s original ambition was to bring a hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft to market by 2035. Reuters reported on 7 February 2025 that Airbus was delaying development because the technology was progressing more slowly than anticipated; Airbus had not provided a new timeline at that point. Reuters’ report and Airbus’s March 2025 update do not establish a revised commercial-service date.

In March 2025 Airbus said it had revised the ZEROe roadmap to mature hydrogen-flight technologies while maintaining its ambition to develop a commercially viable hydrogen aircraft. That is a continued development effort, not a promise of when passengers will be able to fly on one. Airbus’s announcement of a separate next-generation single-aisle aircraft that could enter service in the second half of the 2030s does not set a deadline for ZEROe.

Why was the 2035 target delayed?

The stated reason in Reuters’ 7 February 2025 report was that hydrogen-aircraft technology was progressing more slowly than anticipated. Airbus’s subsequent roadmap update focused on continued technology maturation and did not give a replacement date. Reports of a specific five-to-ten-year slip should be treated as reporting attributed to union comments, not as an Airbus target.

The challenge is not limited to designing an airframe. A hydrogen aircraft also depends on workable propulsion, hydrogen storage and distribution, and the systems and infrastructure needed to support flight. Airbus’s own materials describe ongoing work across those areas, but do not quantify a delivery schedule or establish when all dependencies will be ready.

What Airbus is developing

Fuel-cell electric propulsion

In its March 2025 update, Airbus identified fuel-cell-powered fully electric propulsion as its most promising current pathway. The notional concept has four 2-megawatt electric propulsion engines. Each is driven by a fuel-cell system that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, while two liquid-hydrogen tanks supply the systems. Airbus said the concept would continue to be refined as storage, distribution and propulsion technologies mature. These are concept specifications, not a finalized aircraft configuration.

QIYUMOKE 1/300 A330 Beluga XL1 Diecast Metal Airplane Model Kit with Stand
  • ICONIC BELUGA XL DESIGN** — Inspired by the Airbus Beluga XL, this 1:300 scale model captures the aircraft’s distinctive whale-like shape and oversized upper fuselage. Its playful appearance makes it a fun addition to an airplane collection, shelf, desk, or display cabinet.
  • SOLID DIECAST METAL CONSTRUCTION — Made from diecast metal, this Airbus A330-based model has a sturdy feel and durable construction. Measuring approximately 7.76"L × 7.42"W × 2.68"H, its larger 1:300 scale gives the unique Beluga XL shape plenty of presence while remaining easy to display.
  • FULLY PAINTED BELUGA XL LIVERY — The aircraft features spray-painted livery rather than sticker decals, giving the model a clean and colorful appearance. The distinctive Beluga XL design, aircraft markings, and painted details bring out the playful character of this unusual Airbus transporter.
  • ONE-PIECE MODEL WITH DISPLAY OPTIONS — The main aircraft body is a one-piece diecast design, so the cargo hatch is non-openable. Simple landing wheels and an included display stand let you choose how to display the model, whether on a desk, bookshelf, cabinet, or as part of an airplane collection.
  • FUN AVIATION GIFT & DESK DECORATION — A unique gift for aviation fans, aerospace enthusiasts, teenagers, adults, or anyone who enjoys unusual aircraft. The Beluga XL’s distinctive appearance makes it more than a typical airplane model and adds a fun conversation piece to a home, office, or collection.

Airbus Head of the ZEROe Project Glenn Llewellyn said: “Over the last five years, we have explored multiple hydrogen-propulsion concepts, before down-selecting this fully electric concept.” The company has also explored hydrogen combustion; the March 2025 update makes clear that its current focus is the fuel-cell electric route. The two approaches involve different propulsion chains, but Airbus’s published material does not establish comparative operating costs or climate benefits for them.

Progress so far—and what it does not prove

Airbus said it demonstrated a hydrogen-propulsion system at 1.2 megawatts in 2023. It also reported completing end-to-end testing in 2024 of an integrated fuel-cell stack, electric motors, gearboxes, inverters and heat exchangers. With Air Liquide Advanced Technologies, it developed a Liquid Hydrogen BreadBoard to address liquid-hydrogen handling and distribution. These are technology-development milestones, not certification of a passenger aircraft or a commitment to commercial service.

Airbus’s March 2025 announcement said integrated ground testing of the propulsion bench and hydrogen distribution system in Munich was planned for 2027. That was a plan announced in 2025; it does not confirm that the test has since taken place. The announcement also did not specify passenger capacity, range, unit cost or hydrogen supply needs for the concept.

What the Airbus–MTU partnership means

On 7 July 2026, Airbus and MTU Aero Engines announced that they intend to establish a joint venture to develop and commercialise a fully electric hydrogen fuel-cell engine. This is a later sign that work on the propulsion technology continues, but it does not establish a ZEROe aircraft service date or confirm that the joint venture has already been formed. Airbus’s announcement describes an intention to create the venture.

How to interpret Airbus’s announcements

  • 2035: Airbus’s original ambition for a hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft, not a current delivery commitment.
  • March 2025: A revised technology-maturation roadmap and a notional fuel-cell electric concept, with no replacement entry-into-service date.
  • Second half of the 2030s: A timeframe mentioned for a separate next-generation single-aisle aircraft, not ZEROe.
  • 2027 ground testing: A plan announced by Airbus in March 2025, not confirmation that testing occurred.
  • July 2026: Airbus and MTU’s intention to establish an engine-development joint venture, not a scheduled aircraft launch.

Airbus Head of Future Programmes Bruno Fichefeux said: “Hydrogen is at the heart of our commitment to decarbonise aviation. While we’ve adjusted our roadmap, our dedication to hydrogen-powered flight is unwavering.” That statement describes the company’s intent; the public milestones and partnership do not yet supply a date for commercial flights. See Airbus’s overview of hydrogen and its ZEROe program page for further background.
