Airbus is still targeting the A350F freighter’s entry into service in the second half of 2027. The aircraft made its first flight on 29 September 2026, beginning—not completing—its planned certification campaign. Testing, EASA type certification and customer readiness still lie ahead, so the target is not a guaranteed service date.
Is the Airbus A350F still on track for 2027?
Yes, according to the latest stated schedule: Airbus’s goal remains entry into service in the second half of 2027. Reuters reported the target after the A350F’s first flight on 29 September 2026. That reaffirmation means the goal remained in place after the milestone; it does not mean schedule risk has been eliminated.
The distinction matters because an aircraft’s first flight is an early step in a longer sequence. The A350F has flown, but its certification campaign is still planned, and service entry depends on completing the remaining steps.

What did the first flight demonstrate?
Airbus says MSN700 flew for 4 hours 10 minutes on 29 September 2026, reaching 25,000 feet and 340 knots indicated airspeed. The crew examined handling, engines and core mechanical systems. These are details from the maiden flight, not evidence that the full certification program has been completed.

How the test aircraft are assigned
- MSN700: Airbus assigned it handling-qualities, autopilot-systems and performance testing.
- MSN701: Airbus said it had completed final assembly and was undergoing ground tests. Its planned work includes systems such as air conditioning, water and waste, smoke detection, and hot- and cold-weather testing.
Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Lars Wagner said, “Everything went smoothly in today’s flight,” Reuters reported. A successful first flight is an encouraging milestone, but it does not establish the outcome or duration of the remaining tests.
Why has the A350F schedule raised delay concerns?
The program’s timing had already shifted. Airbus’s April 2025 factsheet listed entry into service in 2027. In a 20 February 2025 report, FreightWaves said Airbus had moved commercial release to the second half of 2027 and cited production challenges at Spirit AeroSystems.

FreightWaves quoted Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury describing Spirit as a bottleneck because it could not ramp up the A350 and A220 programs, and reported that Airbus planned capital spending to help Spirit support production. The same report said Faury also identified other contributing factors that were not disclosed. The public account therefore does not establish Spirit as the sole cause of the schedule change.
The first flight and Reuters’ report of the still-current target provide a later status update, not proof that the earlier supply constraints or other risks have been resolved.

What are the A350F’s published payload and range figures?
For context, Airbus’s April 2025 factsheet listed a payload of up to 111 tonnes and a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles at 109 tonnes of structural payload. These are manufacturer specifications in a document whose figures are stated as of the end of March 2025—not independently validated results from the flight-test campaign.
Order figures also depend on the date and source: Airbus’s FY2025 report, published in February 2026, recorded 27 A350F orders and four new customers in 2025. Reuters reported 115 A350Fs sold as of 29 September 2026. These are separate snapshots and should not be treated as figures for the same reporting date.
