The next major Airbus A220 order has not been identified in the available announcements. The strongest recent demand signal is AirAsia’s firm order for 150 A220-300s, announced on 6 May 2026. To assess where further orders might come from, look to airlines that need to replace regional aircraft, serve routes that cannot support larger jets at their preferred frequency, or better match aircraft size to demand. Those are plausible sources of demand—not confirmed buyers.
Who is buying the Airbus A220?
AirAsia is the clearest recent signal. Airbus said on 6 May 2026 that Malaysia’s AirAsia had placed a firm order for 150 A220-300s, the largest single firm A220 order to that date. Airbus said the announcement took the program past 1,000 firm orders. The airline is the launch customer for a 160-seat configuration. Airbus’s announcement establishes the commitment; AirAsia’s stated plans for the aircraft describe its intended use, not independent proof of route profitability.
The latest dated program snapshot here is Airbus’s June 2026 factsheet, covering the program through the end of May. It reports 1,109 historical orders, 517 deliveries, and 592 aircraft in backlog, across 25 operators. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not a forecast of future deliveries or orders. The end-May totals are a later snapshot than the milestone cited in Airbus’s 6 May AirAsia announcement, so the two should not be treated as figures from the same date. Airbus A220 family factsheet
Another recent firm commitment came from LOT Polish Airlines. On 16 June 2025, LOT announced an order for 40 aircraft: 20 A220-100s and 20 A220-300s, with deliveries planned from 2027. LOT positioned the aircraft as part of fleet modernization and replacement of its existing regional fleet. Its announcement says the agreement could foresee an increase to 84 aircraft, but that possible increase is not part of the stated firm order. LOT’s announcement

What does the A220 order picture say—and not say?
Airbus reported 49 gross A220 orders in 2025. Gross orders are not net orders: the figure should not be presented as accounting for cancellations or other changes. Airbus also reported 93 A220 deliveries in 2025, compared with 75 in 2024 and 68 in 2023. The full-year 2025 announcement did not provide an A220 backlog figure for year-end, so the end-May 2026 factsheet is the latest A220-specific backlog snapshot in these sources. Airbus’s 2025 orders and deliveries release
Airbus describes the A220-100 and A220-300 as a family designed for the 100–160-seat segment, with a maximum range of 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). These are published manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. They help define the kinds of fleet needs the aircraft may fit, but do not by themselves establish operating costs, route economics, or a future sale. Airbus A220 family factsheet

Where could more A220 orders come from?
There is no confirmed next big buyer in the cited announcements. A more grounded way to think about future orders is to consider the fleet problems the A220 could address. The following are demand scenarios, not predictions of named customers.
Airlines replacing regional or small narrowbody aircraft
A carrier approaching a replacement cycle may consider an aircraft in the A220’s seat class if it wants a newer fleet while retaining capacity suited to regional or lower-density routes. LOT provides a concrete example of this rationale: it linked its firm order to fleet modernization and replacement of its existing regional fleet. That does not establish which other airlines have comparable needs or will choose the A220.

Carriers developing thinner routes
A smaller aircraft can give an airline a way to consider routes where a larger narrowbody may offer more seats than demand can support at the desired frequency. AirAsia says the A220 will help it open routes and serve smaller markets. That is the airline’s strategic case; the announcement does not independently demonstrate that any particular route will be profitable.
Airlines seeking better capacity matching across a mixed fleet
AirAsia says it expects to use A220s on ASEAN and wider Asia-Pacific routes from 2028, freeing larger A320 and A321 aircraft for mid-haul flying and A330s for longer routes. In principle, assigning aircraft to markets that better match their size and range can give an airline more flexibility. Whether it works depends on factors such as delivery timing, aircraft utilization, and route economics.

Carriers that want more frequencies, not just bigger aircraft
AirAsia says the A220 could let it increase frequencies on existing routes while opening smaller markets. Other carriers might value that kind of capacity tool, but the rationale alone is not evidence that any additional airline intends to order the type.

- Replacement timing: Is the airline approaching a documented fleet renewal or replacement need?
- Capacity: Does its target market align with the A220 family’s manufacturer-stated 100–160-seat segment?
- Route profile: Do its routes appear to need the aircraft’s capacity and published range? Specifications alone do not prove a specific route’s commercial viability.
- Fleet commonality: How would the aircraft fit alongside the airline’s existing types and operating plans?
- Variant choice: Would the airline’s stated needs point toward the A220-100, the A220-300, or neither? The available sources do not establish a future order mix.
- Delivery and financing: Can the airline accommodate available delivery timing and the financial requirements of a new commitment?
- Commitment status: Is the quantity a firm order, an option or possible increase, or simply a strategic aspiration?
Firm orders are not the same as options or future concepts
AirAsia’s announced 150 aircraft are a firm commitment. Its release also describes flexibility to scale that commitment to 300; that flexibility should not be counted as 150 additional firm orders. Likewise, LOT’s 40 aircraft are the firm order, while the release’s possible increase to 84 is not part of that commitment.
AirAsia’s strategy announcement also refers to an A220-500 as a potential future successor concept. That is not evidence that Airbus has launched the variant or that an airline has ordered it. No future buyer, order date, or eventual A220-100 versus A220-300 mix is established by the cited sources.
What executives say about AirAsia’s order
Airbus CEO Commercial Aircraft Lars Wagner said the A220 would provide AirAsia with “an optimal platform” combining low operating costs and range to open routes across Asia and beyond. Capital A CEO and AirAsia Group advisor Tony Fernandes said the aircraft “unlocks new markets and routes” and brings the airline closer to its aim of building a low-cost network carrier. These are statements of company and airline strategy, not independent verification of cost savings or the commercial viability of specific routes. Airbus’s 6 May 2026 release
