Airbnb’s Reserve Now, Pay Later option lets eligible guests book a stay with no payment due at the time of booking. It is not available for every trip, and it does not change the listing’s cancellation policy: payment is due before the free-cancellation period ends. Check the payment schedule and cancellation deadline shown at checkout before you confirm.
What Airbnb’s Reserve Now, Pay Later option does
Airbnb announced Reserve Now, Pay Later on August 14, 2025. At launch, eligible U.S. guests booking eligible stays at U.S. listings could reserve without paying anything at booking. The option is tied to the booking’s terms, not a general promise of a free cancellation. Airbnb’s announcement described it as a way for U.S. travelers booking eligible domestic stays to reserve a listing without paying upfront at the time of booking: Airbnb Newsroom, August 14, 2025.
Airbnb’s help guidance says the option is offered only when a trip qualifies and it appears on that reservation’s checkout page. The host’s cancellation policy still applies. Payment is due before the end of the listing’s free-cancellation period, so note both the payment date and the cancellation deadline shown for your booking. Who can use it, and where
At launch, eligibility covered qualifying U.S. guests booking U.S.-based listings with moderate or flexible cancellation policies. That initial scope should not be treated as the current full availability map: Airbnb announced an Asia Pacific rollout on February 23, 2026, and later reported that the feature was available on more listings in more countries. The official sources do not provide a complete current country list. For an individual trip, the practical test is whether Reserve Now, Pay Later appears as a choice at checkout. - Look for the option at checkout. If Reserve Now, Pay Later is not displayed for the specific trip, do not assume the reservation qualifies.
- Read the payment schedule. Confirm the amount due now, any later due date, and how that date relates to the free-cancellation deadline.
- Review the cancellation policy. Deferring payment does not change the host’s policy or guarantee a refund after the free-cancellation window.
- Check add-ons separately. Travel insurance or a climate contribution may still be charged at booking even if the stay itself has no upfront payment.
Airbnb’s help guidance says optional add-ons can be charged at booking and directs guests to the terms shown for the reservation. Airbnb Help Center: Reserve Now, Pay Later.
