The headline’s specific storm and continuing cancellations are unconfirmed: the available official notices do not identify the event, affected dates or flights. If your Air Canada flight is disrupted, check its current status and airline notifications, then use Air Canada’s disruption tools to manage your booking. Your refund, care and compensation options depend on the cause, itinerary and applicable passenger-protection rules.
Is Air Canada’s biggest hub facing another winter storm?
The available information does not verify which storm, dates, routes or flights the headline refers to, or establish a current cancellation count. Air Canada published a winter-conditions notice on January 23, 2026, for qualifying itineraries involving Toronto Pearson and Montréal-Trudeau; that notice is date-specific and does not confirm a later storm or continuing cancellations. Read Air Canada’s winter-conditions notice for its stated dates and terms.
A separate Air Canada operational update, dated February 18, 2025, described severe winter weather in Eastern Canada alongside an aircraft incident that reduced capacity at Toronto Pearson. It is historical context, not evidence about a 2026 event. In that update, Air Canada said that approximately 1,290 flights were cancelled over six days and more than 650,000 customers were moved during that period. The airline also said, at the time, that an average day saw approximately 47 per cent of its flights and 46 per cent of its customers pass through Toronto Pearson. It reported that the airport’s normal allowance of approximately 44 take-offs per hour had been restricted to as few as 16 during the conditions described. These are Air Canada’s figures for that 2025 disruption, not current totals.
Air Canada’s 2025 update explained that aircraft and connecting customers moving through Toronto could cause knock-on effects elsewhere in its network. It described Toronto and Montréal as its two largest hubs at that time; that dated description does not establish current rankings or explain a later disruption. Read the February 18, 2025 operational update.

What should you do if Air Canada cancels your flight?
- Check whether your flight is affected. Look up your flight’s status and check airline notifications. A general disruption notice does not confirm the status of a particular flight.
- Open Air Canada’s disruption guidance. Use the airline’s current instructions and available self-service options to review your booking and manage a disruption. Air Canada’s flight disruption page provides general guidance, not a live confirmation of any specific itinerary.
- Compare any proposed alternatives before accepting. Check the earliest confirmed arrival, whether the itinerary is direct or adds a connection, which carrier will operate each flight, and whether reaching another airport would require a ground transfer. Confirm any additional fare or lodging costs rather than assuming they will be covered.
- Keep your records. Save the cancellation or delay notice, booking details, airline communications and receipts for expenses you incur. These can help when you contact the airline or assess a later claim.
If a long airport wait is possible, carrying a portable power bank may help keep your phone usable for flight updates and booking tools. It is optional preparation, not an Air Canada recommendation or a way to avoid disruption.
Does a weather cancellation qualify for compensation?
Not automatically. Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations list meteorological conditions that make safe operation impossible among circumstances outside an airline’s control. But a weather label by itself does not establish the cause of a particular cancellation or settle what the passenger is owed. The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) says the details matter and that entitlement may only become clear after travel, contact with the airline or a complaint.

Rebooking, refunds, care obligations and compensation can depend on the operating carrier, the reason for the disruption, the length of the delay, the itinerary and the rules that apply. Air Canada’s terms distinguish certain disruptions within its control from weather and airport or air-traffic disruptions; the terms do not establish an individual passenger’s outcome based on the headline alone.
- Air Passenger Protection Regulations, section 10 (consolidated regulation current to September 21, 2026).
- CTA guidance on flight delays and cancellations.
- CTA guidance on refunds and compensation.
- Air Canada’s General Terms and Conditions of Carriage.
Check the current terms and contact the airline about your specific itinerary. If you believe the applicable obligations have not been met, the CTA’s guidance explains the available complaint route.
