They document the 2025 flight-attendant dispute and an arbitration arrangement that barred a strike or lockout; a later development is not established here. If your flight is cancelled, Canadian rules still require Air Canada to offer rebooking or a refund in applicable circumstances, even when the cause is a labor disruption. That is separate from whether you qualify for inconvenience compensation.
Is an Air Canada strike currently confirmed?
No new strike is confirmed by the official records available through October 7, 2026. The most recent status information described here concerns the 2025 dispute. It does not establish whether a notice or other change occurred after those records, so check Air Canada, CUPE and government notices for current status before making travel decisions.
Air Canada Vacations said on October 10, 2025 that Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights were operating as scheduled after arbitration began. That was a statement about the situation then, not a current assurance about future flights. The assertion that Air Canada is “keeping quiet” about a newly announced strike is likewise not established by these official records.
What happened in the 2025 flight-attendant dispute?
Air Canada flight attendants are represented by CUPE. Employment and Social Development Canada said the collective agreement covering 10,307 cabin personnel expired March 31, 2025. That figure describes the bargaining unit in the government’s 2026 briefing material, not a current employee count. A strike and lockout began August 16, 2025, after negotiations failed; a tentative agreement ended the work stoppage on August 19. CUPE members rejected that agreement on September 6, 2025. The government note says 99.1% voted to reject it.

The parties then sent the outstanding wage issue to arbitration. Government briefing material said the arrangement barred both a strike and a lockout while the matter proceeded. The dispute included pay for pre- and post-flight duties: CUPE argued those tasks were unpaid, and the tentative agreement included pay for them. The government also launched a consultation on whether flight attendants’ pay complied with the Canada Labour Code; the cited record does not establish an adjudicated finding on that question.
What must Air Canada do if a strike cancels your flight?
The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) treats labor disruptions as circumstances outside an airline’s control. That classification does not remove the airline’s rebooking and refund obligations. Under CTA guidance for large Canadian airlines, including Air Canada, the rebooking sequence is:

- Within 48 hours of the original departure time: Air Canada must rebook you at no charge on its next available flight or a commercial partner’s next available flight, departing from the original airport.
- If that is not possible: Air Canada must rebook you on any airline. A nearby airport can be used if an available option requires it.
The CTA’s guidance says, “The airline must always ensure that you can complete your itinerary as soon as possible.” The exact options for an individual booking can depend on its route, ticketing and applicable jurisdiction.
Should you choose rebooking or a refund?
Rebooking may make sense if the trip is still useful and the offered itinerary works for you. If the disruption means you no longer want to travel, ask the airline about a refund rather than assuming a travel credit is equivalent to cash. The CTA identifies rebooking and refund rules for disruptions outside an airline’s control; ask Air Canada to explain the options that apply to your booking and get the answer in writing.

- For an international itinerary, check whether rules in another jurisdiction or an international convention also apply; the CTA guidance discussed here concerns Canadian passenger-protection rules.
Does a strike cancellation qualify for inconvenience compensation?
Not automatically. The CTA says compensation for inconvenience applies only when the disruption is within the airline’s control and is not required for safety, and other conditions must also be met, including requirements concerning notice, arrival delay and making a claim. Because the CTA classifies labor disruptions as outside an airline’s control, a strike-related cancellation by itself does not establish eligibility.
For a qualifying cancellation by a large airline, CTA guidance lists compensation of $400 for an arrival delay of three to under six hours, $700 for six to under nine hours, and $1,000 for nine or more hours. Those amounts apply only when the passenger meets the relevant eligibility conditions; they are not automatic payments for a labor disruption. The CTA states, “Compensation for inconvenience only applies if the situation is within the airline’s control.”

Do Air Canada’s 2025 special rebooking terms still apply?
No. Air Canada Vacations’ special provisions covered affected bookings with scheduled flights between August 15 and August 23, 2025. Eligible customers could request a refund for the unused ticket portion or choose a future travel credit. The advisory also described exceptional reimbursement for reasonable alternate transport in specified circumstances, including when Air Canada could not rebook the customer or offered only a flight more than five days later, provided the alternative departed within five days. It also described reasonable hotel and meal expenses for customers unable to return home. These were date-limited provisions, not a standing promise for a future strike.
