Air Canada’s newly announced Toronto–Shannon service is scheduled to become its fourth new transatlantic A321XLR route in the current rollout. The seasonal, nonstop route is set to operate three times a week from June 10 through October 3, 2027. The next destinations after Shannon are not a mystery: Toronto–Nice, Toronto–Oslo and Montréal–Basel/Mulhouse are also announced for 2027. No further destination has been confirmed.
What is Air Canada’s new A321XLR route?
Air Canada plans to fly nonstop between Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and Shannon (SNN) from June 10 to October 3, 2027, using the Airbus A321XLR. The September 4, 2026 announcement specifies three weekly departures. Shannon Airport described the service as its only direct connection to Canada. Read the reported route announcement.
The announcement says passengers arriving in Toronto can connect onward to more than 150 destinations. That figure is the announcement’s claim, not an independently audited count. Air Canada also expects connections through Toronto to destinations across Canada, the United States, Mexico, South America and beyond.
Which other A321XLR transatlantic routes are confirmed?
Shannon is part of a wider 2027 expansion. Schedule reporting identifies these new routes:

Where could Air Canada fly the A321XLR next?
Beyond the announced 2027 routes, no next destination is confirmed in the available public schedule information. Naming another city as Air Canada’s next route would be speculation, not a report of an airline decision.

Air Canada’s network-planning executive Alexandre Lefevre has described the key trade-off: “When you look at opening new routes, you need to look at the economics.” He has also said the aircraft can serve markets that may not support a larger aircraft profitably year-round. Those comments point to the factors that would matter in a future route decision:
- Demand from Toronto or Montréal: the airline needs enough local and connecting passengers to support the service.
- Range and payload: Airbus gives the A321XLR a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, but that is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a promise of route performance in every operating condition.
- Seasonality and frequency: a smaller aircraft may make a seasonal service or a route with fewer weekly flights more workable than deploying a larger aircraft year-round.
- Route economics: expected demand, operating costs and the aircraft’s alternative uses must make the service viable.
- Aircraft assignment: the aircraft planned for a route can change, so a route announcement and the latest filed schedule are distinct things.
These are useful ways to assess future possibilities, not evidence that any particular unannounced city is under consideration. Lefevre’s comments on the aircraft and route economics explain the airline’s stated rationale.

How the A321XLR fits Air Canada’s transatlantic plans
Air Canada’s September 2025 announcement positioned Montréal–Palma de Mallorca as the first new destination made possible by the aircraft, and said the A321XLR would also operate Montréal–Toulouse and Montréal–Edinburgh in 2026. That mix of new markets, existing long-haul routes and seasonal flying illustrates why the aircraft is not limited to one kind of service. Air Canada’s announcement of the initial routes also describes the Mallorca service as the first Canadian airline flight to the Spanish island.
Air Canada marked the first A321XLR’s entry into scheduled service on June 9, 2026, initially on Montréal–Toronto; its first international flight was scheduled for Montréal–Toulouse on June 15. The airline says its configuration has 14 Signature Class seats and 168 Economy seats. Airbus reported delivery of the first of 30 planned aircraft on April 24, 2026. Air Canada’s service announcement and Airbus’s delivery announcement provide those details.

Airbus describes the A321XLR as having up to 4,700 nautical miles of range. That figure is a manufacturer specification; actual operating capability depends on route and operating conditions. The aircraft is single-aisle, but Air Canada’s lie-flat Signature Class cabin gives it a premium long-haul option as well as an economy cabin.
What travelers should check before booking
Toronto–Shannon is a future seasonal service, so travelers should confirm that dates and flights are on sale for their intended trip rather than relying on an announcement alone. Before booking, check the operating dates, weekly frequency, aircraft and any connecting itinerary in Air Canada’s live schedule. These details can change between announcement and operation.
