How Stage I and Stage II differed
Stage I: qualifying preliminary test
The preliminary exam had 100 questions in 90 minutes: 20 questions on general knowledge and aptitude and 80 based on nursing-course content. It was divided into five sections, each with 20 questions and 18 minutes. Candidates could answer only questions in the active section. Once its time expired, that section closed and could not be reopened.

Stage II: nursing-focused mains
The mains consisted of 160 multiple-choice questions over 180 minutes. Its nursing syllabus questions focused on case scenarios and assessment of nursing-skill competency. The exam had four sections of 40 questions each, with 45 minutes allotted to each section.
Negative marking and merit
Both stages carried a penalty of one-third of a mark for each wrong answer. Stage I was qualifying only; as AIIMS put it in the advertisement, “NORCET Preliminary will not be used for deciding Merit/Rank for final selection.” Stage II performance determined final merit, subject to the published qualifying criteria.
