What a policy covers depends on the plan, optional upgrades, state-specific terms and the insurer named in the documents—not just the plan name. Before buying, compare covered reasons, benefit limits, exclusions and timing rules with the costs and risks of your trip.
What does AIG Travel Guard insurance cover?
Travel Guard offers several travel insurance plans and optional add-ons. Depending on the plan and policy, coverage may include trip cancellation or interruption, emergency medical expenses, evacuation, travel delays, missed connections, baggage losses or delays, and rental vehicle protection. Not every benefit is included in every plan, and some protections may require an optional upgrade.
Coverage is subject to the policy’s definitions, limits, exclusions and conditions. Travel Guard’s public plan descriptions are useful for comparing options, but the policy and declarations for the plan you buy determine the contract terms.
How to compare plans
Travel Guard lists plans including Deluxe, Preferred, Essential, MedEvac, Pack ’N Go and Annual. The company describes Deluxe as its most comprehensive plan, generally with higher benefit limits; that description does not establish that it is the best fit for every traveler. Compare the actual terms for your state and trip. You can compare Travel Guard plans and review the Travel Guard plan documents.

Does Travel Guard cover trip cancellation?
Trip cancellation coverage may reimburse eligible, prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs when you cancel for a reason covered by your policy. It does not automatically mean you can cancel for any reason. Travel Guard states: “No, there are specific covered reasons and exclusions under Travel Guard’s Trip Cancellation benefit.” (Travel Guard’s trip cancellation coverage explanation.)
Some plans may offer Cancel for Any Reason as an add-on. It is not included by default, and its purchase window, eligibility rules and reimbursement conditions depend on the plan. Read the policy before relying on it. Trip interruption coverage may apply to unused prepaid costs and additional transportation, subject to the policy’s terms and limits.

How are pre-existing medical conditions treated?
A pre-existing-condition exclusion may apply when a condition meets the policy’s definition during a specified look-back period. Travel Guard’s FAQ says that, depending on the plan, the period may be 60, 90 or 180 days, and relevant events may include a first diagnosis, a change in diagnosis or a medication change. Some plans include a waiver if purchased within a specified period after the initial trip payment; neither a waiver nor one universal deadline applies to every plan.
Before purchasing, check the exact policy’s definition, look-back period, waiver eligibility and purchase deadline. Do not assume that a condition is covered simply because you disclosed it or bought a plan; the policy’s waiver requirements and other terms control. See Travel Guard’s plan FAQs and the policy for your state.

Which insurer and policy terms apply?
Travel Guard says its insurance may be underwritten by American Zurich Insurance Company, Zurich American Insurance Company or National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Confirm the insurer on the plan documents offered to you. Travel Guard describes its insurance as available to U.S. residents in states and the District of Columbia, but not all coverages are available in every state.
Use the policy and declarations for your state and purchased plan to verify benefits, exclusions, effective dates, termination provisions and claim requirements. For example, a Massachusetts policy issued by National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pa., says: “TERMS OF THE INSURANCE POLICY WILL GOVERN IN THE EVENT OF A CONFLICT BETWEEN THE TERMS OF THIS DOCUMENT AND THE POLICY.” This is language from that example policy, not a statement that every state uses the same wording. Review the underwriter information and the policy documents that apply to your purchase.

Gather records that show what happened, what you paid and what you recovered from travel suppliers. The required evidence depends on the type of claim; follow the current instructions and submit records through the channels and within the timeframes they specify.
For a cancellation claim
- Documentation supporting the reason for cancellation.
- Your trip invoice or confirmation and proof of payment.
- Records of any supplier settlements, refunds or credits.
For medical or accident-related claims
- A medical certificate may be required for a medical claim, along with authorization to release medical information.
- An incident report may be required for an accident-related claim.
Keep receipts and correspondence with airlines, hotels, tour operators and other suppliers. The Travel Guard claim documentation guide lists examples of required records; the exact checklist varies by claim and policy.

Check for gaps and overlapping coverage
Before purchasing, compare the proposed policy with protection you already have through health, life, home, auto or credit-card coverage. Check what each existing policy actually covers, its limits and exclusions, and whether it applies to the trip or expense in question. This can help you identify both gaps and benefits you may already have; do not assume that overlapping coverage means a claim will be paid twice.
