AI chipmakers compared: Broadcom, Nvidia, AMD, Samsung, SK hynix and Micron

These six companies do not sell the same kind of AI chip. This guide separates accelerator platforms, custom silicon, networking and memory, then explains the evidence behind each company’s AI position and the limits of current comparisons.

There is no single winner in this six-company comparison because “AI chipmaker” describes several different businesses. AMD and Nvidia are associated with general-purpose AI accelerators; Broadcom supplies customer-specific accelerators and the networking that connects them; Samsung, SK hynix and Micron supply high-bandwidth memory (HBM), data-center memory and related storage. Their products can work in the same AI server, but they are not interchangeable products that can be ranked on one performance chart.

For investors and technology buyers, the useful comparison is each company’s role in the AI hardware stack, the evidence of customer adoption, and whether an announcement describes a product already shipping or a future plan. The sources available for this comparison do not provide a common independent benchmark, current like-for-like market-share data or comparable pricing for all six companies.

What “AI chipmaker” means in this comparison

An AI computing system is a stack rather than a single chip. It normally includes an accelerator that performs matrix and other parallel calculations, high-bandwidth memory that feeds data to that accelerator, networking silicon that links processors across a cluster, and storage and control components. A company can be strategically important to AI infrastructure without selling a merchant GPU.

  • Accelerator platforms: General-purpose data-center GPUs are sold to many customers and run through a software ecosystem. AMD’s Instinct family is documented in its annual report and CDNA architecture material; Nvidia’s role in the supplied evidence is established through its platform relationships and memory ecosystem, not a complete current product-generation comparison.
  • Custom silicon: A cloud provider or large technology company may commission an accelerator designed for its own workloads. Broadcom’s XDSiP materials describe this customer-specific model.
  • Memory and storage: HBM sits close to an accelerator and supplies very high bandwidth. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are included primarily because of these components and their infrastructure partnerships.
  • Interconnect: Ethernet and other networking fabrics let many accelerators operate as one cluster. Broadcom’s AI networking material focuses on this scale-up and scale-out layer.

That division changes how you should read an announcement. A GPU purchase agreement, a memory partnership and a networking design win are different types of evidence. They can all matter financially, but none is a direct substitute for the others.

Side-by-side roles and evidence

Company Primary role evidenced here Specific evidence What the evidence does not establish
Nvidia AI-platform company and ecosystem coordinator Announced a multiyear memory technology partnership with SK hynix; Samsung identified memory and storage products designed for Nvidia AI infrastructure. A complete current Nvidia accelerator lineup, common benchmark results or comparable pricing.
AMD Merchant data-center accelerator platform Its 2025 annual report describes customer deployment of Instinct MI350X GPUs. The CDNA family spans Instinct MI100 through MI400 series. A reported agreement covers 6 GW of AMD GPUs for OpenAI, with first deployment planned on MI450 products. Completed delivery of the 6 GW agreement or an independent performance ranking against other companies.
Broadcom Custom accelerators, ASICs and AI-cluster networking Its 3.5D XDSiP platform targets customer-specific XPUs and compute ASICs. Networking material covers Ethernet fabrics. Announcements describe support for Meta’s MTIA silicon and a collaboration with OpenAI involving custom accelerators and Broadcom networking. Broadcom as a directly comparable merchant-GPU vendor or proof that announced capacity has already been deployed.
Samsung HBM, memory modules and AI storage At GTC 2026, Samsung Semiconductor identified HBM4, SOCAMM2 and the PM1763 SSD as products designed for Nvidia AI infrastructure. A standalone general-purpose accelerator business or independent system-level performance results.
SK hynix HBM and memory partner Nvidia and SK hynix announced a multiyear partnership to advance memory for AI factories. A merchant GPU platform or a directly comparable accelerator benchmark.
Micron HBM, data-center memory and storage Micron’s AI and data-center pages cover HBM, memory and storage. It states that its HBM3E 12-high stacks deliver 1.2 TB/s bandwidth. An independent cross-vendor bandwidth test, a complete accelerator platform or comparable pricing.

Nvidia: the platform anchor in this evidence set

Nvidia is usually discussed as an accelerator-platform company, but the documented facts available for this article are narrower. Nvidia and SK hynix announced a multiyear technology partnership to advance memory for AI factories. That matters because accelerator performance depends on keeping compute units supplied with data; memory capacity, bandwidth, packaging and qualification are system-level constraints.

Samsung’s GTC 2026 announcement also identifies HBM4, SOCAMM2 and the PM1763 SSD as products designed for Nvidia AI infrastructure. These relationships show Nvidia’s influence across an ecosystem of memory and storage suppliers. They do not, by themselves, provide a complete comparison of Nvidia accelerator generations, throughput, prices or availability, so those conclusions should not be inferred here.

AMD: a general-purpose accelerator roadmap with named deployment plans

AMD’s 2025 annual report says customers were deploying Instinct MI350X data-center GPUs and describes strong demand for AMD’s data-center AI accelerators. The filing also records an agreement for 6 GW of AMD GPUs for OpenAI, with first deployment planned on MI450 products. “Planned” is important: the figure describes a company-reported agreement and deployment schedule, not 6 GW already operating.

AMD’s CDNA overview presents a family of architectures running from Instinct MI100 through the MI400 product series. CDNA combines compute, HBM and interconnect capabilities in an accelerator platform. For a buyer, that means software compatibility, memory configuration and cluster networking can be as important as the nominal GPU model.

AMD offers the clearest accelerator-specific evidence among the non-Nvidia companies covered here, but the available documents remain company claims and filings rather than an independent head-to-head test. They do not establish how an MI350X or future MI450 system compares with another vendor under a particular workload, software stack, power envelope or price.

Broadcom: custom AI silicon and the network around it

Broadcom occupies a different position from a merchant GPU supplier. Its 3.5D XDSiP platform describes a way to build customer-specific XPUs and compute ASICs. A custom accelerator can be optimized for one company’s models, data paths or operating costs, but it is not a standardized product that every customer can order in the same configuration.

  • Hardware compatability: The MX3 is compatible with the PCI-SIG M.2 M-key 2280 Specification. It can be used with the Raspberry Pi 5 with a M-key 2280 HAT.

AI clusters also need high-speed links between accelerators. Broadcom’s scale-out networking explainer describes Ethernet fabrics used to connect GPUs and XPUs across clusters. Networking can determine how effectively a group of processors behaves as one system, particularly when workloads exchange data frequently.

Two announcements illustrate Broadcom’s customer-specific approach. Its Meta announcement concerns support for Meta’s MTIA custom silicon and infrastructure. Its OpenAI collaboration announcement concerns systems combining OpenAI-designed accelerators with Broadcom networking technology. The OpenAI announcement targets 10 GW of custom AI accelerators, with deployment intended to begin in the second half of 2026 and finish by the end of 2029. That is an announced plan or commitment, not evidence that 10 GW has already been delivered.

Broadcom Semiconductor Solutions Group president Charlie Kawwas described the strategy this way: “Custom accelerators combine remarkably well with standards-based Ethernet scale-up and scale-out networking solutions to provide cost and performance optimized next-generation AI infrastructure.” It is a vendor executive’s statement about the strategy, not an independent measurement of cost or performance.

Samsung: memory, modules and storage for AI systems

Samsung Semiconductor’s GTC 2026 material identifies HBM4, SOCAMM2 and the PM1763 SSD as products designed for Nvidia AI infrastructure. HBM is mounted or packaged close to an accelerator to provide a wide, fast path for model weights and intermediate data. SOCAMM2 and SSD products address other memory and storage layers in an AI server.

Samsung therefore belongs in a comparison of AI infrastructure suppliers, but not on a simple GPU leaderboard. The relevant questions are qualification with a platform, capacity, power and thermal characteristics, product availability and the customer’s system design. The cited material does not provide an independent benchmark that places Samsung’s products against every competing memory product.

SK hynix: a strategic HBM supplier

The Nvidia–SK hynix announcement describes a multiyear technology partnership to advance memory for AI factories. SK hynix is consequently relevant to the compute market through memory supply and co-development, not as an interchangeable GPU vendor.

For investors, a partnership can signal ecosystem alignment and potential future demand, but it does not specify delivered volumes, revenue, margins or the share of a particular accelerator program that SK hynix will supply. Those details are not established by the announcement itself.

Micron: HBM bandwidth and broader data-center memory

Micron’s AI memory and storage page and data-center memory page cover HBM, server memory and storage used in AI infrastructure. Micron states that its HBM3E 12-high stacks deliver 1.2 TB/s bandwidth. That number is Micron Technology’s 2026 product claim for that stack configuration, not an independently measured result and not a universal bandwidth figure for every Micron HBM product.

Bandwidth alone cannot predict application performance. Capacity, latency, packaging, interconnect topology, software kernels, power limits and the workload determine whether a system can use that bandwidth. A fair comparison would hold those variables constant across suppliers; the available sources do not do so.

How the announced capacity figures should be read

Figure Company and date context Meaning What not to infer
10 GW Broadcom and OpenAI announcement, 2025 Announced scale of a custom-accelerator collaboration, targeted to start in the second half of 2026 and finish by the end of 2029. That 10 GW has been delivered, installed or generating revenue already.
6 GW AMD’s 2025 annual report, filed in 2026 Company-reported GPU purchase agreement with OpenAI; first deployment planned on MI450 products. That the agreement represents completed deployment or equivalent scope to Broadcom’s 10 GW figure.
1.2 TB/s Micron Technology, 2026 Micron’s stated bandwidth for HBM3E 12-high stacks. That it is an independent benchmark or directly comparable with every HBM configuration.

The 10 GW and 6 GW numbers should not be combined into a league table. They may differ in scope, implementation, timing and what the power figure counts. Neither number means delivered operating capacity.

A practical framework for comparing these companies

1. Identify the layer you are actually evaluating

Start by deciding whether your question concerns accelerator compute, custom silicon, HBM, server memory, storage or networking. Comparing a memory supplier with a GPU platform without separating those layers produces a misleading conclusion.

2. Separate shipped products from roadmaps

Look for language such as “customers deployed,” “shipping” or a named product already in use. Treat “planned,” “targeted,” “announced” and “multiyear partnership” as forward-looking evidence. AMD’s MI350X deployment statement is different from its planned MI450 deployment; Broadcom’s 2026–2029 schedule is different from completed installation.

Rank #4

3. Demand a common test before judging performance

A meaningful accelerator comparison needs the same model or workload, precision, batch size, software version, host system, memory configuration, networking topology, power limit and measurement method. The cited sources do not supply that common test, so no defensible overall performance winner can be named.

4. Treat customer announcements as evidence, not guarantees

Named relationships with OpenAI, Meta, Nvidia or other ecosystem participants can demonstrate commercial engagement. They do not guarantee final volume, delivery timing, profitability or technical success. Confirm later filings and shipment disclosures before treating a plan as realized business.

5. Match the risk to the business model

  • Accelerator platforms depend on product cadence, software adoption, supply and the ability to win complete systems.
  • Custom-silicon suppliers depend on a smaller number of very large design programs and successful customer deployments.
  • Memory suppliers face qualification cycles, capacity investment, pricing cycles and concentration among major AI-system customers.
  • Networking suppliers depend on cluster architecture and whether customers choose Ethernet, proprietary links or another interconnect approach.

This framework is more useful than asking which logo is “the AI winner,” because the six companies monetize different bottlenecks.

What the available evidence cannot answer

No source cited here supplies a fair, current market-share comparison for all six companies. There is also no shared price dataset, independent performance benchmark, complete product-availability schedule or delivered-capacity accounting that puts the companies on equal terms. Company annual reports and product announcements are valuable for understanding stated strategy and customer commitments, but they are not substitutes for controlled testing or audited segment-by-segment comparisons.

That limitation is especially important for personal-finance decisions. A headline partnership can affect expectations before products ship; a vendor bandwidth claim can describe a component rather than an entire server; and a large power figure can refer to a multiyear plan. Evaluate subsequent financial filings, shipment disclosures and independently reproducible tests rather than treating any one announcement as a guarantee.

Bottom line for readers and investors

AMD is the most directly documented general-purpose accelerator challenger in this evidence set, with MI350X customer deployment and a reported MI450 plan for OpenAI. Nvidia remains the platform reference point, but the supplied material here establishes its role mainly through memory partnerships rather than a full accelerator comparison. Broadcom is an adjacent infrastructure company focused on custom XPUs and Ethernet networking. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are essential memory and storage suppliers whose products enable accelerator systems but should not be ranked as GPUs.
