Several cars listed by automotive publications can reach 60 mph in less than five seconds, but the available evidence does not validate a current, ranked list of 19 “cheap” cars. “Cheap” depends on the price ceiling and whether you mean new or used; published acceleration times also vary by trim and test source. Here are the defensible examples—and what you should check before treating any sub-five-second figure as a buying fact.
What counts as a “cheap” car?
There is no universal price threshold. In the U.S. market, Car and Driver’s list of affordable performance vehicles, updated March 3, 2026, uses a $60,000 base-price cap. iSeeCars labels its list “The Fastest Cars Under $50k” and presents it as a new-car comparison. Those are different definitions, not a single agreed standard.
Neither threshold makes every car in a list a current bargain: the iSeeCars page’s model and pricing context may be older than the current market, and the available figures here do not establish current model-year MSRP or used transaction prices for the examples below. Treat them as publication-defined affordability examples, not confirmed current offers. New-car MSRP and used-car asking prices should not be mixed in one ranking.
Which examples have a published sub-five-second time?
The table shows the figures reported by the named publications. They are not a head-to-head test: the available source details do not establish matching model years, equipment, test conditions, or rollout conventions across the entries.

| Vehicle configuration named by source | Published 0–60 mph time | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Mustang GT with Performance Package | 3.9 seconds | iSeeCars’s under-$50,000 new-car table; the cited table names this trim. |
| Chevrolet Camaro SS | 4.0 seconds | iSeeCars’s under-$50,000 new-car table. |
| Volkswagen Golf R | 4.1 seconds | Car and Driver’s March 3, 2026 list; that publication reports 328 horsepower. |
| Volkswagen Golf R | 4.3 seconds | iSeeCars’s under-$50,000 new-car table. |
The two Golf R figures differ by 0.2 second. That is a reason to preserve the source attribution, not average the results or assume one number applies to every model year and configuration. A time belongs to a tested or estimated setup—not just a nameplate.
Why can 0–60 times differ?
Trim and drivetrain matter
Performance packages, transmission, tires, drivetrain, and model year can change a vehicle’s acceleration. The Mustang result above is specifically for the GT with Performance Package; it should not be generalized to every Mustang GT. Similarly, a model name without its year and configuration is not enough to reproduce a result.

Test methods are not necessarily comparable
Automotive publications may use different vehicles, conditions, and measurement conventions. The available figures do not establish a shared test protocol for all four rows, so a few tenths of a second should not be read as a reliable cross-publication ranking. Look for the exact test vehicle and method in the publication’s individual review before comparing close results.
EPA acceleration figures are not all instrumented measurements
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 EPA Automotive Trends Report, published in February 2026, says manufacturers do not directly submit 0–60 data to EPA. For most vehicles, EPA calculates times from vehicle attributes; the report says this method is not valid for battery-electric vehicles. Hybrid and electric figures instead come from external sources and may be more uncertain. An EPA figure and a magazine road-test result therefore should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

How unusual is a sub-five-second new car?
EPA reports an average 0–60 time of 7.5 seconds for new vehicles in model year 2024 and a preliminary projection of 7.3 seconds for model year 2025. The report describes the 2024 average as close to the fastest average for any model year and less than half the early-1980s average. These fleet figures give useful context for how quick a sub-five-second car is relative to the new-vehicle average; they do not show that such a car is inexpensive to buy or own.
How to shop without being misled by the headline time
- Set a real budget and market. Decide whether you mean a new car under $50,000, a new car under $60,000, or a used car at a specific purchase budget. Confirm the model year, trim, and current local price rather than relying on an older list’s label.
- Match the configuration. Check the exact trim, package, transmission, drivetrain, and model year associated with the acceleration result. A figure for one configuration is not proof that another version qualifies.
- Read the test details. Prefer results from one publication using a consistent test method for all the cars you are comparing. If sources differ, keep their figures separate and note the source rather than ranking them as though they came from one test.
- Compare the whole ownership cost. Include fuel or charging, tires, brakes, and insurance in your budget. A quick 0–60 time alone does not establish that the vehicle is cheap to run.
Can the original list of 19 be treated as verified?
No. CarCody’s exact-title list presents 19 cars, but it does not identify a test publication, date, or exact model year for each reported time. Without those details, its entries cannot support a reliable current ranking or confirm that every car repeatedly runs under five seconds. The examples above are limited to figures attributed to named publications; they do not validate the full 19-car list.
