They are examples, not a verified ranking of Japan’s most expensive products. The prices come from different sellers and listing dates, so they are not directly comparable.
How to read these prices
The prices below are listed in yen by the named Japanese source. Grand Seiko’s figures are tax-inclusive prices on its official Japanese collection page, captured on October 7, 2026. The incense prices are from Nippon Kodo’s official online shop and may change with price or inventory. The gold examples come from Mitsukoshi’s 2025 Great Gold Exhibition listing, not a current catalog; the page notes that some prices changed from December 1, 2025. Check each seller for current price and availability.
Because the examples span watches, incense and gold craft, the list does not compare like with like. The sources do not provide a common cost breakdown, market-wide statistic or consistent basis for ranking these products.
Grand Seiko: high-end watches
Grand Seiko describes its Masterpiece Collection as the work of specialists at Atelier Ginza and the Micro Artist Studio in Shiojiri. The brand highlights movement design and finishing, careful exterior finishing, practical performance and forms rooted in Japanese aesthetics. These are the maker’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of production costs. The listed Japanese prices are tax-inclusive; one model was shown as planned for release in October 2026, so its release and availability should be confirmed with the brand.

Nippon Kodo: premium incense
Nippon Kodo attributes its premium line’s prices to rare kyara and Vietnamese agarwood, limited production and skilled hand finishing. The maker says the incense is produced in winter using as little heat as possible to preserve fragrance. These are the company’s explanations; its listing does not provide an independent cost audit. It describes agarwood as occurring in limited areas of Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam, and kyara as a high-grade type of agarwood.

Mitsukoshi: Japanese gold craft
These are examples from Mitsukoshi’s 2025 Great Gold Exhibition, which presented metalwork and objects associated with techniques passed down since the Edo period. The listing gives purity and weight for the items below, making the gold content relevant price context. It does not break down the gold-market value, labor costs or resale value, so craftsmanship alone cannot be treated as a complete explanation of any listed price.

Mitsukoshi identifies Mineishi Okuyama as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property designation (Living National Treasure). The event page said some objects were made to order, with an estimated delivery time of about 90 days; it does not identify every item’s order status. - Material: The gold listing identifies K24 or K18 purity and object weights; Nippon Kodo identifies rare incense ingredients, including kyara and Vietnamese agarwood.
- Specialist work: Grand Seiko points to movement-making and exterior finishing; Nippon Kodo describes skilled hand finishing; Mitsukoshi presents gold objects made using traditional metalworking techniques.
- Scarcity and timing: Nippon Kodo says its premium line is produced in limited quantities. Grand Seiko’s SBGD228 is listed as a limited model with a planned release date. Mitsukoshi’s event page says some gold pieces were made to order.
Those factors help explain why the examples can be expensive, but they do not establish a shared formula for their prices. The figures are seller-listed prices for different products, not independent valuations or evidence that these are definitively Japan’s 19 most expensive products.
