Affini-T Therapeutics said in July 2023 that it was closing its Seattle lab. The company told GeekWire the site was closing; separate Endpoints News reporting, reproduced in a LinkedIn post, said the lab was expected to close at the end of August. Affini-T’s stated rationale was to focus on its Watertown, Massachusetts, operation as its work shifted toward gene editing.
What happened to Affini-T’s Seattle lab?
GeekWire reported on July 20, 2023, that Affini-T was shutting down its Seattle lab and that a company spokesperson confirmed the closure. GeekWire described Affini-T as a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center spinout developing engineered T-cell cancer therapies. GeekWire’s report
A LinkedIn post reproducing Endpoints News reporting gave more detail: it said the Seattle site was expected to close at the end of August 2023 and identified 17 Seattle-based employees. Why was the Seattle lab closing?
In the Endpoints account reproduced on LinkedIn, CEO and co-founder Jak Knowles said Affini-T wanted to concentrate on building out its Watertown office near Boston as the company transitioned toward a gene-editing workflow. He also linked Seattle to Affini-T’s early history: the company was founded out of Fred Hutch and had based many early efforts there. Endpoints reporting reproduced on LinkedIn

This is the rationale attributed to Knowles in that report. The available 2023 coverage does not establish that financial distress prompted the closure.
Were Seattle employees offered a move to Boston?
Yes. GeekWire reported that some Seattle employees had been offered the option to relocate to the Boston-area operation. The reproduced Endpoints account put the Seattle group at 17 employees and said they were offered relocation. It also reported, citing the company, about 80 employees outside Seattle and more than 40,000 square feet of lab space in the Boston area; these are 2023-era reported figures, not current staffing or an independent measurement.

The available reports do not say how many employees accepted relocation or what happened to those who did not. They also do not establish the exact final day the Seattle lab operated.
