To start, choose a specific audience and problem, publish useful original content through a channel you can maintain, and apply to a program whose products fit that audience. Approval, qualifying sales and income are not guaranteed; program rules vary and can change.
How affiliate links work
An affiliate publisher recommends a product or service and shares a tracking link from a merchant or affiliate program. If a reader follows that link and completes an action that qualifies under the program’s terms, the publisher may earn a commission. The terms determine what counts, how referrals are attributed and when payment is made.
The recommendation should help readers whether or not they click. Explain what the product is, why it may suit the reader’s situation, and the commercial relationship. An affiliate link is not proof that the publisher has personally used or tested a product.
Amazon Associates is one example, not a definition of the whole industry. Amazon describes its US program as a way for creators, publishers and bloggers to earn from qualifying purchases and programs. Its US Associates page, checked October 4, 2026, advertises rates of up to 10%, varying by product category, and payment approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which earnings accrued. These are program terms, not a projection of what a beginner will earn. See Amazon Associates’ current US program information; other marketplaces and countries may have different terms.

How to start affiliate marketing
-
Choose a reader and a problem
Define whom you want to help and what question or task you can address accurately. A narrow audience and concrete need make it easier to decide which products are relevant. Do not choose a topic solely because an offer advertises a large commission.
-
Pick a publishing channel you can maintain
A website or blog can support searchable explanations and comparisons; a social account can carry content native to that platform. You do not automatically need a website, but program eligibility and promotion rules depend on the channel. Check the current requirements of each program before building your plan around it.
-
Publish useful original content
Create content that answers real questions, gives readers a sound basis for comparison, and is available to the audience you intend to serve. Some programs review a channel before approval. For Amazon’s US program, the application review page checked October 4, 2026 says sites must be public and contain robust original content; it calls 10 posts a good rule of thumb, not a universal threshold. Check Amazon’s current application review criteria if you plan to apply.
-
Compare programs and read their live terms
Look at product relevance, approval criteria, qualifying actions, attribution, category-specific commissions, payment timing, permitted promotion methods and channel restrictions. Direct merchant programs, networks and marketplace programs are different routes; no one route is best for every publisher. Shopify’s beginner overview of affiliate marketing outlines the basic workflow, but confirm each provider’s terms directly before applying.

Apply, then use properly tagged links
Joining or submitting an application does not necessarily mean you have been approved. Once accepted, use the program’s link tools and place links beside the relevant recommendation, where readers can understand why the link is there.
-
Track outcomes and keep content accurate
Distinguish page visits, link clicks, qualifying transactions and commissions actually paid. Update recommendations when product details or program terms change. These are separate stages: traffic alone is not a commission, and a reported commission is not necessarily money already paid.
What Amazon Associates requires in the US
Amazon’s requirements are specific to its program and can change; they are not industry-wide rules. Its US application review page, checked October 4, 2026, says an applicant must generate at least three qualifying sales within the first 180 days for review, and personal orders do not count. The page also describes accepted channels and evaluates whether sites are public and have original content. Social-channel eligibility and audience expectations are channel-specific, so consult the live review page rather than assuming any account qualifies.
Amazon’s US homepage currently advertises “up to 10%,” with actual rates varying by product category, and says payment is approximately 60 days after the end of the earning month. Neither the maximum rate nor the payment schedule says how many commissions you will earn. If you are outside the United States, check the relevant Amazon marketplace’s program information.

Disclose commissions clearly
Tell readers about the financial relationship where they encounter the recommendation or link. The FTC says the disclosure should be clear and conspicuous and close enough that readers notice the connection. Its example is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” The phrase “affiliate link” by itself may not tell readers that you are paid. Read the FTC’s Endorsement Guides Q&A.
Amazon separately requires this identification for its Associates program: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Its help page also says link-level disclosures should be clear, conspicuous and near the link. Use the applicable disclosure for your program and follow the laws and platform rules for your location and publishing medium; requirements are not identical everywhere. See Amazon’s disclosure guidance.
Be truthful about product claims and your own experience. The FTC’s advertising overview says claims must not be deceptive or unfair and should be supported by evidence; do not claim a product produces a result or say you tested it unless you have a proper basis. The FTC notes that its Endorsement Guides were revised in 2023. Review the FTC’s guidance on endorsements, influencers and reviews.
What to expect before your first commission
There is no universal timeline for earning a commission, and the available program facts do not establish an industry-wide beginner income or typical time to first sale. Results depend on whether readers find the content useful, whether the offer fits their needs, and whether their actions meet the program’s terms. Do not treat an advertised maximum rate, an application milestone or the existence of an affiliate link as an income forecast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild around the value of the content first: help a defined reader make a better-informed choice, disclose your incentive, and keep recommendations current. Program approval and qualifying transactions are separate hurdles, and payment follows the schedule in the applicable agreement.
