Aer Lingus pilots’ second ballot passed on June 17, 2024: 99% of those who voted supported industrial action, with turnout of 89%, according to RTÉ News. The vote authorized possible action, including a strike; it did not mean pilots had already walked out. The ballot was followed by a work-to-rule, an eight-hour strike, and a later pay agreement.
What was the result of the second ballot?
The paper ballot returned 99% support for industrial action on 89% turnout. IALPA president Captain Mark Tighe described the result as “an incredible reaffirmation of our mandate for industrial action in pursuit of a meaningful pay offer,” as reported by RTÉ News on June 17, 2024.
The vote was conducted in person over the weekend of June 14–17, with polling locations in Dublin and Cork. It gave the union a mandate to pursue industrial action up to and including a strike; it was not itself a strike announcement or a walkout.
Why did pilots vote a second time?
IALPA had first reported that an electronic ballot produced 98% support for industrial action, with 98% participation among eligible members. Aer Lingus raised concerns about the electronic process, citing statutory secrecy requirements and the union’s constitution. IALPA opted to hold a paper ballot rather than spend weeks contesting the issue in court, according to The Irish Times.

These were separate ballots, so their support and participation figures should not be treated as a direct measure of changing opinion. The cited accounts describe the parties’ disagreement about the electronic process; they do not report a court ruling that either ballot was valid or invalid.
Did the ballot mean pilots were on strike?
No. On June 18, IALPA announced an indefinite work-to-rule that would begin June 26. The union said pilots would not work overtime or other out-of-hours duties, would follow published rosters, and would refuse roster changes. Those measures were a subsequent industrial action, distinct from the ballot itself, as reported by RTÉ News.

On June 20, Aer Lingus said it planned to cancel 10% to 20% of flights over June 26–30 in response to the anticipated action. That was the airline’s announced plan at the time, not a statement of cancellations that necessarily occurred. The dispute later included an eight-hour strike on June 29. Aer Lingus published its plan through its Media Centre.

In July 2024, IALPA members voted to accept a Labour Court-recommended deal. RTÉ News reported that 85% supported acceptance, with turnout of 96%; the recommendation included a 17.75% pay increase over four years.
