Adyen does not support Bitcoin as a payment method, and its Help Center says it has no current plans to add support. That is a statement about Adyen’s payment services—not a broader rejection of Bitcoin.
Does Adyen accept Bitcoin?
No. Adyen’s Help Center page, “Does Adyen support Bitcoins payments?” states: “Adyen doesn’t support Bitcoin as a payment method, and there are no plans currently to implement this.” The statement is not attributed to a named executive.
For a shopper, that means Bitcoin is not an available Adyen checkout option. For a merchant, it means an Adyen integration does not provide Bitcoin acceptance. Product plans can change, so merchants making a purchasing or integration decision should confirm the current position with Adyen.
What Adyen’s Bitcoin policy does—and does not—mean
It is about payment-method availability
The Help Center answer concerns whether a customer can pay using Bitcoin through Adyen. It does not establish that Adyen rejects Bitcoin in every context or that it has taken a position on cryptocurrency as an asset class.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Merchant eligibility is a separate question
Adyen’s restricted and prohibited products and services list covers business activities and distinguishes categories by merchant and platform or partner status. Those rules concern whether a business or activity is eligible to use Adyen; they do not make Bitcoin a supported checkout payment method. Businesses should check the live policy for the applicable category and account type.
Currency conversion does not add Bitcoin
Adyen’s Dynamic Currency Conversion documentation describes a card-payment feature: eligible shoppers can choose a supported billing currency. Choosing a currency for a card transaction is not the same as paying with Bitcoin.

Was lack of customer demand the reason?
An IMF-hosted presentation, “Paying in cryptocurrency: The positions of key companies,” includes a historical summary that attributes an earlier decision not to accept crypto payments to a lack of customer demand. The chart item is labeled “Feb 21,” but the surfaced material does not establish a complete event date or provide a verified verbatim quote from Adyen’s CEO.
Treat that as historical context, not as Adyen’s current explanation. Its present Help Center statement gives the support status and says there are no current plans; it does not state why.

What merchants should check before choosing a payment provider
If Bitcoin acceptance is a requirement, ask providers for details that are not established by Adyen’s statements above. In particular, verify:
- Whether Bitcoin is explicitly accepted at checkout, rather than merely mentioned in a policy or business-eligibility document.
- Whether the provider settles funds in fiat currency, cryptocurrency, or offers a choice.
- Which countries and jurisdictions are supported for both the merchant and its customers.
- Whether the merchant’s business model and account type are eligible.
- How the payment method integrates with the checkout and what fees or settlement conditions apply.
Adyen’s published position answers only the first point for its own service: Bitcoin is not supported as a payment method.
