Who is the former Chelsea star?
The clue points to Adrian Mutu, who played for Chelsea. A 2004 account in the British Association for Sport and Law’s Sport and the Law Journal described £60,000 a week as the salary Juventus had agreed to pay Mutu during proposed loan discussions. That is a historical wage reference, not evidence of his present earnings or financial position. Source
Why did Chelsea seek compensation?
Chelsea dismissed Mutu in 2004 after he failed a cocaine test, BBC Sport reported. The dispute that followed concerned compensation for breach of contract. FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber ordered Mutu to pay Chelsea EUR 17,173,990 in 2008; the amount and the subsequent appeal are recorded in the 2009 Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) award.
How much was the award?
The original award was stated in euros: EUR 17,173,990. The 2009 CAS award also provided for 5% annual interest if the amount was not paid within the stipulated period. The Guardian reported the ruling at the time as more than £14.6 million. That pound figure is contemporaneous press coverage, not the original award currency or a confirmed current balance. In 2018, BBC Sport reported that Mutu had lost a further appeal and that the award had been upheld by CAS and the Swiss Federal Supreme Court. These decisions establish the history of the compensation claim; they do not, by themselves, establish what is owed today or what collection action is currently under way. BBC Sport
Is Adrian Mutu facing bankruptcy now?
That has not been verified. A ProSport report published on 2 October 2026 said Mutu stated that he had not paid the Chelsea compensation. This is a report of his statement, not independent confirmation of the current unpaid balance, enforcement activity, or insolvency proceedings. ProSport

No official insolvency-register entry or court record establishing that Mutu is currently bankrupt or facing formal insolvency proceedings was verified in the material available for this account. Nonpayment of a debt and bankruptcy are not interchangeable: the latter requires evidence of a formal legal process or status. Without an authoritative current record, the headline’s bankruptcy claim should be treated as unconfirmed.

What the record establishes
