They also wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond. The reports of that sitting establish the demand, but do not establish that Modi answered it that day.
What happened in Parliament on February 6, 2023?
As the Lok Sabha convened, opposition MPs raised “Adani Sarkar shame shame” and sought a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani Group. The protests came after Hindenburg Research alleged stock manipulation by the group; those allegations were the subject of political demands, not findings established by the parliamentary proceedings described in the contemporaneous reports. Moneycontrol reported the slogan and adjournment.
The opposition’s demand for a response from Modi was also reported. Congress president and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said the opposition was willing to discuss the President’s Address but wanted the prime minister to reply on the Adani issue first, according to The Indian Express. That account does not confirm that Modi replied during the sitting.
What inquiry and discussion did the opposition seek?
The opposition called for a JPC investigation; The Indian Express also reported a demand for a Supreme Court-monitored probe. These were proposed routes for investigating the allegations, not evidence that either inquiry had been established by the sitting.

Opposition notices also raised concerns about public financial institutions’ exposure to Adani companies. The Indian Express reported claims involving public money through the State Bank of India (SBI) and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). Moneycontrol reported Rajya Sabha notices seeking discussion of investments by LIC, public-sector banks and financial institutions in companies losing market value. These were opposition concerns reported at the time, not independent findings in the cited accounts.

Protests and demands for discussion disrupted proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and both Houses were adjourned, according to Moneycontrol’s account. In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar appealed to members to conduct business, saying: “The entire nation is looking at us. They want things in the House to be regulated as per the Constitution. We are not honouring the aspirations of people. Honourable members, I appeal to you in the name of democracy and Constitution to transact business of the day.”

The Indian Express reported that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said “naarebaazi” was not in the interest of the country and that people had elected MPs to raise their issues. It also reported that at least 16 opposition parties met in Kharge’s chamber that day.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
- Established in the contemporaneous accounts: the slogan was raised in the Lok Sabha; opposition members sought an inquiry and a response from Modi; and both Houses were adjourned amid protests.
- Not established by those accounts: that the allegations against the Adani Group were proven, that Modi answered the demand during that sitting, or what the eventual official disposition of the requested probes was.
