On November 21, 2024, several Adani Group shares fell between 10% and 20% in intraday trading after U.S. prosecutors announced an indictment alleging bribery tied to solar-energy contracts. The Sensex was down 0.57% in the same report. Those figures describe an intraday snapshot—not every Adani stock’s closing move. Adani Group denied the allegations, and the U.S. Department of Justice said defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
What happened to Adani shares on November 21, 2024?
Business Standard reported that several Adani Group shares declined 10% to 20% during intraday trading on November 21, 2024, while the BSE Sensex fell 0.57%. The reported range is not a single percentage for the whole group, nor does it establish where each share finished the day.
The market reaction followed the U.S. Department of Justice’s November 20 announcement of an indictment. Business Standard also reported that Adani Green subsidiaries decided not to proceed with proposed U.S. dollar-denominated bond offerings after the announcements.
What did U.S. prosecutors allege?
The DOJ’s case page identifies the matter as United States v. Adani, et al., docket 24-CR-433, filed October 24, 2024; the department announced the case on November 20. Prosecutors alleged that defendants agreed to pay more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials between approximately 2020 and 2024 to secure solar-energy supply contracts. They said the contracts were projected to produce more than $2 billion in after-tax profits over about 20 years. These are allegations and projections, not findings of fact.

The indictment announcement also described allegations that executives misrepresented anti-bribery practices and concealed the alleged scheme while seeking financing from investors and lenders. Prosecutors referred to alleged loan facilities totaling more than $2 billion and bond offerings exceeding $1 billion. Those amounts describe financing in the allegations; they are not a measure of investor losses.
The DOJ’s press release states: “The charges in the indictment are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.” The existence of an indictment does not establish guilt.

How did Adani Group respond?
In a statement dated November 21, 2024, Adani Group called the allegations “baseless” and denied them, saying it would seek legal recourse. The company’s denial is its response to the accusations; it is not a court determination.

An Associated Press report in 2026 said prosecutors had asked a judge for permission to drop the criminal charges, and that the judge still needed to approve the request at the time of that report. That account does not establish that the charges were finally dismissed; the final court order is not confirmed here.
The SEC also had a related civil case, separate from the DOJ criminal prosecution. The AP report said the SEC was settling that case, but the settlement terms and final status are not established here. Do not treat the reported criminal-case request and the SEC matter as one proceeding.

What the share-price move does—and does not—show
- It records a short-term market reaction. The reported 10%–20% declines were intraday moves on November 21, 2024, following the indictment announcement.
- It is not a uniform group-wide closing return. The report described several shares and an intraday range, not the closing performance of every Adani-listed company.
- It does not prove the allegations. Share prices can react to legal and financing risks before allegations are resolved; market movement is not a verdict.
- It is not a measure of damages. The alleged financing totals and projected contract profits are figures in prosecutors’ account, not estimates of losses caused by the market decline.
