About AOL Monthly Access Charges: Identify and Stop the Billing

AOL discontinued dial-up in 2025, but active plans and add-ons can still bill. Find the charge, cancel the right subscription, and keep free AOL Mail.

“AOL monthly access charge” is often a legacy label, not a current dial-up fee. AOL discontinued its U.S. Dial-up Internet service, AOL Dialer, and AOL Shield browser on September 30, 2025. A charge that continues now is more likely tied to an active AOL plan, a separate subscription such as AOL Mail Plus or support, or billing items such as taxes or a past-due balance. You can usually keep your AOL email by changing to the free plan rather than closing the account.

Does AOL still charge for dial-up internet?

No. AOL says its Dial-up Internet service, AOL Dialer, and AOL Shield browser were discontinued on September 30, 2025. Historical descriptions and prices for AOL dial-up do not establish what a current charge is for. If a statement still appears to reference an old access plan, check the account’s billing history for a final, delayed, or separate subscription charge. AOL’s discontinuation notice lists U.S. support at 1-888-265-5555. AOL’s dial-up discontinuation notice

AOL Mail is a separate matter: AOL offers a free plan that retains an AOL username, email, contacts, and specified protections and services within AOL Mail, provided you have an independent internet connection. Free access does not include every benefit of a paid plan. AOL’s free-plan FAQs

What can an AOL charge represent?

An AOL-branded item on a bank or card statement is not necessarily an internet-access fee. It may be a recurring membership, a paid add-on, a payment adjustment, or a subscription purchased through an app store. AOL’s billing guidance identifies these possible categories:

  • AOL plan or membership: A recurring fee for an active paid account or plan.
  • Premium service: An individual add-on can be billed separately from the main plan. AOL Mail Plus and support or security services are examples of paid services to check.
  • Taxes and local fees: These can vary with location and account details.
  • Communication charges: AOL’s billing explanation describes possible surcharges associated with long-distance calls or use of an AOLnet 800 number. These are not universal charges.
  • Checking-account payment surcharge: AOL says a surcharge may apply to checking-account billing. Its help page does not establish a universal amount; debit or check cards are treated as credit-card payment methods for this surcharge. AOL’s payment and billing surcharge guidance
  • Past-due amount: An unpaid prior-period balance may post together with a current bill.
  • Third-party or private-area membership: AOL’s billing guidance says such charges may appear as separate items.

AOL bills in advance for the next month of service, and a billing date may also include charges incurred since the previous bill. A free account can have a nominal billing date without a monthly membership fee. AOL’s billing and account-management questions

How to identify the exact charge

  1. Sign in with the Primary username. AOL says only the Primary username can access the online billing statement for an AOL service. If you use a secondary username, switch to the account’s Primary username.
  2. Open My Account or MySubscriptions. Review the active plan and each individual subscription; do not assume the main plan is the only service billing your payment method.
  3. Open the billing statement or payment history. Match the service name and billing date to the bank or card entry.
  4. Compare the details. Check the amount, taxes, surcharges, payment method, and whether the item is a recurring fee or a one-time adjustment.
  5. Review Recent Activity if the account is unfamiliar. AOL’s account activity view can show actions, timing, and affected usernames.

AOL describes recurring subscriptions that continue billing while active even if the subscriber no longer uses or accesses the service. Deleting an app or simply stopping use does not itself confirm cancellation. AOL subscription terms

Why you might see two charges or an unexpected amount

  • Two billing periods posted together: AOL identifies a missed or unprocessed prior-month payment posting with the current bill as one reason for an apparent duplicate.
  • A plan plus an add-on: A main subscription and a separately billed premium service may appear as distinct items.
  • Taxes or surcharges: These can increase the total and depend on the account, location, and payment method.
  • A renewal: A renewal can be at a different price than an earlier promotional offer. Check the current account display rather than relying on an old price listing.
  • App-store billing: A purchase through Apple or Google may be billed separately from direct AOL charges.
  • Temporary card verification: AOL says it may place a temporary $1 authorization when verifying a card. AOL says it should generally be removed by the bank within a day or two; it is not necessarily a completed purchase.

Compare posted transactions with the AOL statement before treating two amounts as duplicate billing. For a temporary authorization, check whether it disappears rather than assuming it is a recurring subscription. AOL’s billing guidance

  1. Go to MySubscriptions.

  5. Choose a reason if prompted, then select Cancel subscription.

Cancel a standard paid AOL subscription

  1. Go to MySubscriptions.
  2. Select Manage beside the plan.
  3. Choose Cancel my subscription, then Continue to cancel.
  4. Select a reason if requested, then choose Cancel now.

AOL’s subscription cancellation instructions

Canceling billing and closing an AOL account are different actions. The free-plan route is the relevant one if you want to retain AOL email. Save the cancellation confirmation and check that the subscription shows as canceled or pending cancellation.

What to expect after cancellation

AOL says paid service is billed in advance. A change from paid billing to free AOL during a billing cycle generally leaves access active until that cycle ends; a status such as Pending Cancellation may remain until then. A charge for service incurred before cancellation took effect can still be valid. Do not assume a mid-cycle cancellation guarantees a prorated refund.

Check each premium subscription separately, because canceling the main plan may not cancel an add-on. If the service was purchased through Apple or Google, use that store’s subscription controls. Review the next statement and retain the confirmation so you can distinguish a remaining valid charge from a new renewal.

Cancel AOL Mail Plus or an app-store subscription

For AOL Mail Plus purchased directly from AOL, manage the subscription in My Subscriptions. If purchased through Apple’s App Store or Google Play, the relevant store controls cancellation and refund handling. AOL Mail Plus renews automatically unless canceled; AOL says an unsuccessful payment can cancel the service and restore paid advertisements in the inbox.

What to do about an unfamiliar or unauthorized AOL charge

  1. Match the transaction. Compare its exact descriptor, date, and amount with AOL’s billing history.
  2. Check all usernames in the household. A family member or a secondary account may use the same payment method; the billing statement may require the Primary username.
  3. Check app-store subscriptions. Review Apple and Google subscriptions if anyone may have purchased AOL Mail Plus or another service on a phone or tablet.
  4. Secure the AOL account. If the charge still does not make sense, change the password and review Recent Activity for unfamiliar actions.
  5. Contact AOL billing support. Ask AOL to identify the service and payment before treating an unclear transaction as fraud.
  6. Contact the card issuer or bank if AOL cannot validate it. Dispute a charge that remains unauthorized after the account checks.

Do not begin with a bank dispute if the account may simply still be active: first confirming the service can explain the charge and avoid complications with account access or a legitimate unpaid balance. Remove or update a payment method only after confirming which active services depend on it.

Should you keep an AOL paid service?

Base the decision on the service you actually use, not on the old “monthly access” label. Keep a paid AOL plan only if its current benefits—such as support, security, or other membership features—are worth the displayed renewal cost to you. If you need only an AOL email address, the free plan may be sufficient. AOL Mail Plus is for readers seeking its paid mail features; broader technical support is a different need from resolving an AOL billing question. Names, benefits, prices, and availability can vary by country and purchase channel, so use the offer shown in your account rather than a historical price list.

For example, an AOL product page showed Assist by AOL at $12.99 per month or $139.99 per year when reviewed in August 2026; those dated prices are not a universal AOL access rate and may change. Assist by AOL product page
