Aave documents several controls to contain exposure, but those controls do not make market prices, oracle reporting, or liquidation execution infallible—and the feed and settings can differ by reserve and network.
How Aave V3 gets prices for a reserve
Aave’s Protocol Documentation says, “Each reserve within the Aave Protocol is associated with an oracle contract.” The oracle reports asset prices used in collateralization calculations, and governance selects the oracle for each reserve. Depending on its design, an oracle may update prices according to time-based or deviation-based rules.
Aave’s documentation describes Chainlink Price Feeds and the Correlated Assets Price Oracle (CAPO) among the oracle types used on production markets. CAPO is intended for strongly correlated assets, such as wrapped assets that track an underlying asset. This does not mean every reserve uses the same feed, adapter, or fallback: the exact path depends on the asset and market.
Market manipulation and oracle failure are different risks
Manipulating a market input
A market-input attack distorts the price data an oracle uses or reflects. Aave’s risk-parameter documentation gives the example of an illiquid Uniswap V3 pair whose price can move drastically after a single trade. Thin liquidity, low trading volume, limited venue diversity, or wide spreads can make a market price easier to move and can also make it harder for liquidators to acquire or sell an asset.

Compromising or disrupting the reporting path
An oracle failure or compromise is a problem with the price-reporting path itself, rather than simply a distorted market input. Aave’s risk documentation identifies reliance on third-party oracles as a possible source of incorrect valuation if an oracle fails or is compromised. A historical Aave governance discussion titled “Market Manipulation vs. Oracle Exploits” distinguishes these risks and mentions market-wide Chainlink feeds as one mitigation approach; that older discussion is not a guarantee about current feed configuration or security.
When the asset’s own mechanisms affect value
An oracle can report its reference price correctly while an asset’s own minting, redemption, accounting, exchange-rate, backing, or proof-of-reserves mechanism is impaired. Aave’s Risk Framework ARFC proposes reviewing these asset-internal paths as part of risk assessment. Because it is a proposal, it should not be read as proof that the proposed review requirements are adopted policy.

How a bad price can change liquidation eligibility
Aave’s V3 overview says a borrower’s Health Factor depends on collateral and debt values, oracle prices, and accrued interest. If an oracle reports collateral as worth less, or debt as worth more, the Health Factor can fall; a price moving the other way can make the position appear safer than it is. When the Health Factor falls below 1, the position becomes eligible for liquidation. External liquidators can repay debt in exchange for collateral.
Eligibility and execution are separate. A position can cross the liquidation threshold, but actual liquidation still depends on liquidators being able and willing to transact. Aave’s risk-parameter materials identify liquidity and trading volume as relevant to liquidation, so a thin market can compound the problem: it can make the input price more vulnerable and make a liquidation harder to execute effectively.

Collateral parameters
Loan-to-value (LTV) and liquidation-threshold settings govern how much borrowing a collateral position can support and when it becomes eligible for liquidation. Aave identifies these as collateral-risk parameters. They shape exposure but cannot ensure that an oracle input is accurate or that a market remains liquid.
Isolation and siloed modes
Isolation mode can constrain riskier collateral, including by limiting which stablecoins may be borrowed and allowing one isolated collateral asset at a time. Siloed mode can restrict an asset with a potentially manipulatable oracle to supply-only use rather than letting it serve as collateral. These modes contain the ways an asset can contribute to protocol risk; they do not repair a bad price report.

Supply and borrow caps
Optional caps place upper bounds on how much of an asset can be supplied or borrowed, limiting the amount of exposure associated with that asset. A cap does not prevent market manipulation, oracle failure, or a lack of liquidity for liquidators.
PriceOracleSentinel and sequencer availability
Aave’s documentation says, “The PriceOracleSentinel contract validates if the operations are allowed depending on the PriceOracle health.” Its documented role includes specified oracle-health and sequencer-availability conditions, particularly sequencer downtime on Layer 2 networks. After sequencer recovery, a grace period is intended to let users improve their positions; borrowing can be disabled under specified conditions. This is a conditional operational safeguard, not a universal protection against bad market data or every network outage.

What to verify for a particular reserve
There is no single feed configuration that should be assumed for all Aave V3 markets. The relevant oracle, any adapter or fallback, update behavior, collateral parameters, caps, mode restrictions, and sentinel conditions may be reserve- and network-specific. Aave’s public descriptions of oracle types and controls do not, by themselves, establish the live feed address or settings for every reserve.
For a particular position or asset, use the exact Aave market and network configuration rather than extrapolating from another reserve. To assess the practical risk, the material questions are:
- Which oracle contract and price path are configured for this reserve, and what market or reference price feeds into it?
- How deep and diversified are the relevant trading markets, and how might a sudden price move affect liquidation execution?
- Which LTV, liquidation threshold, supply or borrow caps, and isolation or silo restrictions apply?
- Are oracle-health or sequencer-availability checks relevant on this network, and what operations do they restrict?
- Does the asset depend on separate minting, redemption, accounting, exchange-rate, or backing mechanisms that could affect its value?
A separate Aave technical asset-listing framework ARFC says a robust oracle path is required and that a non-Chainlink primary source needs explicit justification. That is proposed framework language; without confirmation of adoption, it should not be treated as binding policy.
