How the $600 million games fund fits into a16z’s $7.2 billion raise
In its April 16, 2024 announcement, a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz listed five venture strategies and their allocations. Games received the same announced amount as American Dynamism, while Growth accounted for more than half of the total.

These are the amounts in the firm’s announcement, not measures of investment returns or the amount already invested. The announcement does not specify a deployment schedule or typical investment size. Andreessen Horowitz’s April 16, 2024 announcement provides the total and allocations.
What is a16z Games Fund Two?
The $600 million Games allocation was a second dedicated a16z games fund. The firm announced its inaugural vehicle, Games Fund One, on May 18, 2022, also at $600 million. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous April 16, 2024 report described the new fund as Games Fund Two and reported that Jonathan Lai said a16z Games’ assets under management had risen above $1.2 billion. That AUM figure is a reported statement, not a separately audited measure.

The $1.2 billion-plus figure refers to reported a16z Games AUM after the second fund, rather than a claim about returns or capital already deployed. GamesBeat’s report covers the second fund and the attributed AUM statement.
What a16z said its first games fund would invest in
The clearest published description of a16z’s games thesis is for Games Fund One, not the second fund. In its May 2022 announcement, a16z identified three areas:

The Fund One announcement also framed games as online services and communities, with multiplayer and user-generated content among the themes it discussed. It named Andrew Chen, Jonathan Lai, and James Gwertzman as Fund One leaders. Those details describe the earlier fund’s stated focus; the April 2024 firm-wide announcement does not establish that every theme or leadership detail carried over unchanged to Fund Two. a16z’s Games Fund One announcement contains the original description.
