‘A Minecraft Movie’ passed $500 million in worldwide box-office gross during its early 2025 theatrical run. Associated Press reported that after two weeks in theaters the film had already surpassed $550 million worldwide, so the half-billion mark falls inside those first two weeks. The lifetime total shown in current databases is much higher, and it comes from a later snapshot. Gross is ticket revenue, not studio profit, and this article explains how to keep those figures separate.
When the film opened and when it crossed $500 million
Warner Bros. Pictures’ official site states that the film opened internationally beginning April 2, 2025, and in North America on April 4, 2025. The film is based on the Minecraft video game, was directed by Jared Hess, and stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black. The Numbers lists its rating as PG and its runtime as 100 minutes.
Associated Press reported a $301 million global debut: $157 million in the U.S. and Canada and $144 million internationally. AP attributed the U.S./Canada figure to studio estimates and described the international figure as an estimate. Neither source gives the exact day the film crossed $500 million, so this article does not supply one. What the reporting does establish is that the milestone came within the first two weeks.
| Date or period | Figure or event | Basis and qualification | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 2, 2025 | International release begins | Official release schedule | Warner Bros. Pictures official site |
| April 4, 2025 | North American release | Official release schedule | Warner Bros. Pictures official site |
| Opening period (2025) | $301 million global debut | $157 million U.S./Canada (studio estimate); $144 million international (AP estimate) | Associated Press |
| Within the first two weeks | Passed $500 million worldwide | Exact crossing date not stated; AP reported more than $550 million after two weeks | Associated Press |
| May 13, 2025 | Home-video release date | Warner Home Video release date as listed | The Numbers |
| June 2, 2025 | More than ¥135 billion worldwide | Studio-reported figure using Box Office Mojo data and a stated rate of ¥143 per U.S. dollar; roughly $944 million at that rate | Warner Bros. Japan |
| Checked in 2026 | $960,387,780 worldwide (listed total) | Database snapshot; totals can be revised | The Numbers |
Milestone versus lifetime total
The $500 million figure is a point-in-time marker. The worldwide total keeps growing for as long as a film stays in theaters and in later markets, so a later number is always higher than the milestone. The Numbers lists $960,387,780 worldwide, checked in 2026. That is about 52 percent above the $500 million mark and roughly double it in terms of share, which is why the milestone describes the early run rather than the film’s final performance. The sources do not say when that listed total was last updated.

Domestic and international split
The Numbers breaks the current listed total into two regions. International grosses are larger than domestic grosses, which matters for anyone comparing the film with a domestic-only release.
| Region | Listed gross | Share of listed worldwide total |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic (U.S. and Canada) | $424,087,780 | 44.2% |
| International | $536,300,000 | 55.8% |
| Worldwide | $960,387,780 | 100% |
The shares are calculated from The Numbers’ listed figures and reflect that database snapshot only.

Opening weekend and the two figures to reconcile
Readers will find two different opening-weekend domestic numbers. AP reported $157 million for the U.S. and Canada based on studio estimates from the time. The Numbers lists the domestic opening weekend at $162,753,003. The gap is about $5.8 million. The sources do not explain it, but it is consistent with an early estimate being replaced by a later figure. For a reference that needs one number, use the database figure and label it as such.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Pamela Abdy said after the opening weekend: “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater,” as quoted by Associated Press. That comment was about the opening weekend. It was not a statement about the $500 million milestone.

Japan as a separate, dated cross-check
Warner Bros. Japan published its own figures, which are dated differently from the global numbers. As of June 2, 2025, it reported worldwide gross above ¥135 billion, using Box Office Mojo data and a stated conversion of ¥143 per U.S. dollar. At that rate the figure is roughly $944 million, and because the studio said “above,” that is a floor rather than an exact total. Separately, as of June 22, 2025, Japanese gross was ¥3.8 billion with 2.99 million admissions.
Because the yen figures are converted at a fixed rate, a different exchange rate would produce a different dollar amount. Do not compare the June 2 global yen figure with the June 22 Japan-only figure as if they were the same measurement.

Gross is not profit
Box-office gross is the money collected from ticket sales. It is not the studio’s net income. Two points in the reporting make this clear:
- The Numbers lists a $150 million production budget. AP states that this reported production cost excludes marketing and promotion.
- Gross does not show the share that cinemas keep from ticket sales, the cost of distribution, or the other expenses a studio carries. The sources do not give figures for those items.
Neither source establishes the studio’s final receipts or the film’s profitability, so a large gross figure should not be read as a profit figure.

- Confirm the date of the snapshot. A “passed $500 million” statement describes the film at that date, not its final result.
- Confirm the basis. Worldwide gross from ticket sales is different from studio receipts or profit.
- Check the currency and the conversion rate for any non-U.S. figure.
- Separate domestic, international, and estimated figures. An early estimate may later be replaced by a database figure.
- Re-check database totals before quoting them, because listed totals can be revised.
Applying these checks to the film’s numbers gives a clear picture: the half-billion milestone is an early-run marker from 2025, the current listed worldwide total is a later database snapshot, and neither figure is a measure of profit.
