Google says shoppers can add products while using its services, track price changes and availability, and check out either on Google or on a participating retailer’s website. Its current help page lists Search & Shopping, AI Mode, and Gemini Apps as places to discover and add products; it does not list Google Images separately, so support for Images as a distinct cart surface is not confirmed.
What Google’s Universal Cart does
Google describes Universal Cart as one place to keep products from different merchants while shopping across Google services. The company says it can monitor items in the background for deals and price drops, show price-history insights, and alert shoppers when an item is back in stock. In a custom-PC example, Google also described flagging incompatible components. These are capabilities Google announced, not independently verified test results.
Google’s announcement called the cart a shopping hub across Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail. Its announcement-time plan was to start with Search and the Gemini app in the United States that summer, then add YouTube and Gmail. That rollout plan should not be read as confirmation that every surface is available now.
Can you add products from Search or Images?
Google Wallet Help currently identifies Google Search & Shopping, AI Mode, and Gemini Apps as places to discover and add products to Universal Cart. It does not name Google Images separately. Although Google’s announcement described shopping across services, the available documentation does not establish Images as a distinct, currently supported cart surface.

Where Universal Cart is available
Google Wallet Help currently says Universal Cart is available only in the United States. This is the documented availability of the cart itself; it should not be confused with the separate geographic scope of UCP checkout, which Google describes for eligible products in the United States, Canada, and Australia and only with select merchants and partners.

How checkout works
Google documents two purchase paths. Which one appears depends on whether the retailer participates in checkout on Google.
| Checkout path | Where the transaction happens | Payment and order details | Seller of record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checkout on Google | On Google for participating merchants | Google says shoppers may use saved payment methods. Whether order information appears in Wallet depends on merchant data sharing. | The retailer remains the seller of record. |
| Checkout on the merchant’s website | On the retailer’s website; Google can populate the retailer’s cart | The customer completes purchase on the merchant’s site. Whether order information appears in Wallet depends on merchant data sharing. | The retailer. |
Google Wallet Help says the cart and orders are saved in Wallet. However, some purchases do not appear in My Orders because those merchants do not share order information with Google. If there is a problem with a purchase, Google directs customers to contact the merchant.

Universal Cart and UCP checkout are not the same thing
Universal Cart is the shopping hub. UCP—the Universal Commerce Protocol—is an open standard Google describes as coordinating agents and systems across product discovery, buying, and post-purchase support. UCP checkout is a particular checkout implementation, not evidence that Universal Cart is available everywhere the protocol might be used.
Google Merchant Center Help says UCP checkout is available for eligible products in the United States, Canada, and Australia, but only for select merchants and partners. Merchants must meet requirements and complete technical implementation. Eligible listings in AI Mode in Search and Gemini can show a checkout button. The retailer remains the seller of record even when the purchase is completed on Google.

Google’s May 20, 2026 retailer-focused post described plans to bring UCP-powered checkout to Canada and Australia in the coming months and later to the U.K. It also discussed possible expansion into hotel booking and local food delivery. Those are announced plans, not confirmation of present availability.

Google says Universal Cart can surface price drops, price history, restock alerts, and—in its custom-PC example—compatibility issues. Google’s May 19 announcement also described using Wallet payment perks, loyalty information, and merchant offers to help shoppers choose. These are company-described features; availability and performance may vary, and the announcement does not provide independent testing.

For scale, Google reported that people shop across its services more than a billion times a day and that its Shopping Graph contains over 60 billion product listings. These are figures reported by Google, not independently verified measurements.
Which retailers are involved?
For select checkout features, Google’s May 19 announcement named Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Shopify merchants including Fenty and Steve Madden. Being named as an example does not establish that every product from a retailer is eligible for checkout on Google. Participation and eligibility are limited, and Google says the retailer remains the merchant of record.
Google’s May 20 post also discussed merchant tools such as AI performance insights and conversational product attributes. These relate to retailer participation and product discovery, rather than changing who sells the item or handles a purchase problem.
Quick Recap
What shoppers should check before buying
- Check which merchant is selling the item and whether checkout is happening on Google or on that merchant’s website.
- Review the item’s price, merchant, and product details in the cart before purchase; a cart grouping is not a guarantee that an item is eligible for checkout on Google.
- Keep the merchant’s order confirmation. Some retailers do not share order data with Google, so an order may be absent from Wallet’s My Orders.
- For returns, delivery, or other purchase issues, contact the merchant, which remains the seller of record.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
