Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To set up a Shopify store, decide what and where you’ll sell, create the account, configure business and transaction settings, build the storefront, test an order, and choose a plan before launch. The steps below follow Shopify’s setup guidance, but you can adjust the order to fit your products and fulfillment model. Payment, tax, channel, hardware, and plan features vary by country and eligibility.
1. Decide what you’ll sell and where
Before opening settings, define your products, intended customers, and sales channels. Shopify recommends clarifying your goals first in its general checklist for starting a new Shopify store.
- Online only: Focus on product pages, checkout, shipping, and online customer support.
- In person: Plan for point-of-sale (POS) setup and compatible hardware. Availability varies by country, so check Shopify’s current options for your location.
- Social channels: Check each channel’s current country, product, and account requirements before building your launch plan.
Also estimate how many products you’ll list and whether customers will receive shipped orders, use local delivery, or collect purchases in person. Those choices shape later settings.
2. Create your Shopify account
Start an account through Shopify’s getting-started page and follow the onboarding prompts. Shopify’s getting-started checklist covers account creation and the setup areas that follow.

During onboarding, enter accurate information and keep track of the login and account email you use. You can refine store settings as you work through the steps; do not assume every feature shown during setup is available for every country or subscription plan.
3. Enter business details and store standards
In the Shopify admin, complete your business details and set the standards the store will use. Shopify’s checklist identifies the business name and address, billing information, default currency, and weight unit as setup items.
- Use the business address that applies to your operations and store records.
- Confirm the billing details for the Shopify account.
- Choose the default currency and weight unit with your customers, product measurements, and fulfillment process in mind.
These defaults affect how store information is presented and how operational settings are handled. Confirm them before adding a large catalog or configuring shipping.
4. Configure payments, taxes, markets, shipping, and fulfillment
Set up the transaction path before you invite customers to buy. Shopify’s checklist includes payment providers, markets, taxes, shipping, and options such as pickup or local delivery. Availability and requirements depend on your location, products, and plan.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Payments and markets
Choose payment providers available to your business and decide which markets you intend to serve. Confirm the currencies and payment methods customers can use in each market; do not assume a provider or feature is available in every country.
Taxes
Review the tax settings for the places where you sell and get qualified local advice if you are unsure of your obligations. Shopify says it can calculate taxes, but generally does not file or remit them for you unless you use Shopify Tax automated filing. Tax compliance remains the merchant’s responsibility; see Shopify’s setup checklist and verify current service availability and terms.
Shipping and fulfillment
Set shipping rates and the locations or methods that apply to each product and market. If you offer pickup or local delivery, configure those options only where you can reliably fulfill orders. Product weight and shipping details should be ready before you test checkout.
5. Add policies and set checkout preferences
Prepare the information customers need to understand a purchase and resolve a problem. Shopify’s checklist includes refund, privacy, and terms policies, customer accounts, and checkout preferences. Add accurate contact information and review each policy against the laws and practices that apply to your business.

Useful informational pages may include About, Contact, FAQs, Refund, Shipping, and Privacy pages. Shopify partner guidance describes these common pages and product CSV imports in its guide to starting a Shopify store. Make sure policy links and contact details are easy for shoppers to find.
6. Connect a domain and authenticate sender email
Choose the web address customers will use and connect it to your store. Check the exact domain rules shown in your admin before confirming changes: Shopify’s setup checklist has stated that a myshopify.com domain can be changed only once during initial setup, and domain rules can change.
Set a sender email for store messages and authenticate it. Shopify says SPF and DKIM authentication is required by major providers such as Gmail and Yahoo; unauthenticated messages might be sent to spam. Follow the current instructions in Shopify’s store setup checklist and your email provider’s guidance.
7. Choose and customize a theme
Select a theme and adapt it so shoppers can understand what you sell and how to buy it. Preview the store on relevant screen sizes, then check the home page, product pages, navigation, and cart. Keep the design focused on clear product information and an uncomplicated path to checkout.

Shopify’s checklist recommends trying themes and customizing navigation and storefront content. Do this before launch, but expect to revisit the design after products and collections are in place.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Add products, collections, and navigation
Create product listings with at least a title and price, then add the details customers need to make a purchase decision. Shopify warns that product entry can be the most time-consuming part of setup when the catalog is large.
Build complete product listings
Prepare concise titles, descriptions, images, prices, and relevant product details. Include the tax and shipping information needed for your products. If you have many items, Shopify partner guidance describes importing products by CSV in its store setup guide.
Organize the catalog
Group products into collections that make sense to customers, then add those collections and important pages to your navigation. Avoid changing product URLs frequently: Shopify warns that doing so may affect search rankings. If you need to change one, consider the impact and use the redirect options available in your admin.

9. Preview the storefront and place a test order
Before launch, preview the customer-facing store and test the complete order path. Shopify recommends placing at least one test order during setup and after changes to payment settings in Preparing your Shopify store for launch.
- Open the storefront preview and check product information, links, navigation, and layout.
- Place a test order using an available test method. Shopify says test orders do not incur charges.
- Check checkout, order processing, inventory changes, shipping, and taxes in the order flow.
- If Shopify Payments test mode is enabled, turn it off before accepting real payments.
Fix any errors you find and repeat the relevant checks after changing payment settings or other parts of the order flow.
10. Choose a plan and launch
A Shopify subscription plan must be selected during the free trial to launch the store publicly. Compare the current plans in your account against the capabilities your business actually needs; plan entitlements, fees, reporting, and staff access can vary and may change.
Before making the store public, verify that policies, contact information, and shipping rates are complete. Shopify’s launch checklist advises previewing the store and testing the order flow first. When you are satisfied, remove any storefront password or use the launch control shown in your admin.

Additional channels are optional, not a prerequisite for opening an online store. Their rules can change. For example, Shopify’s checklist says Google & YouTube requires a Merchant Center account, visible contact details, refund and terms policies, supported-country shipping, and product identifiers such as GTIN, MPN, or brand. It says TikTok availability is limited to listed countries and products must comply with regional prohibited-product rules. Check current requirements for your store before connecting either channel.
