There are four consumer-facing virtual-card options in the available official product information that are relevant to online purchases, but they are not five equivalent disposable credit card services. Two are tied to eligible credit-card accounts, while Privacy.com and Revolut’s U.S. offering use debit funding. Their numbers also work differently: some can be single-use, while others are reusable or tied to a merchant.
A virtual card can keep a merchant from receiving your underlying card number in supported transactions, but it does not make a purchase anonymous or guarantee approval. Choose based on how the transaction is funded, whether it will recur, and whether your account and checkout device qualify.
What counts as a disposable credit card number?
A virtual card number is a separate payment credential used instead of the number printed on your physical card. “Disposable” is often used loosely: a service may offer a number that closes after one payment, a number locked to one merchant, or a reusable virtual number. Those behaviors are not interchangeable.
Nor does a virtual number make a payment anonymous. These are account-based products, and providers may require identity or account verification. A virtual number can reduce exposure of the underlying card details in supported transactions, but it does not guarantee that a merchant will accept the payment or prevent every kind of fraud or billing problem.

Which service fits your purchase?
Privacy.com: bank-funded controls for one-off or merchant-specific spending
Privacy connects cards to a user’s checking account, and purchases debit that funding source as they occur. Its product information describes single-use cards that close after payment, as well as merchant-locked and category-locked cards. It also describes pausing cards and setting limits. That makes it a debit-funded option for people who want to separate a purchase from their underlying bank-card details—not a way to borrow on a credit line.
Privacy says its service is for U.S. citizens or legal residents age 18 or older who have a checking account at a U.S. bank or credit union. Its product page describes the Personal plan as having no fee on domestic purchases; check current plan pricing and cardholder terms before signing up, since fees and eligibility may change. The service’s support article, “How does Privacy work?”, updated July 5, 2024, says each virtual card has a unique number, CVV, and expiration date.

Capital One: virtual numbers attached to an eligible credit-card account
Capital One describes general virtual card numbers and merchant-specific numbers for eligible credit-card holders, along with controls to lock or delete a number. Its product material also describes a one-time option. These numbers remain connected to the underlying eligible credit-card account, so purchases are charged through that account rather than funded from a separate prepaid balance.
Not every Capital One card or account user can create virtual numbers, and the company says they work with most, not all, online merchants. Check availability while signed in to the relevant account. Capital One also distinguishes account virtual numbers from using Google Pay autofill; do not assume those are the same feature or that one makes the other available.

Amex Virtual Card Number: useful within supported Google and device environments
Amex’s feature is for eligible U.S. credit cards and works with Google Chrome on desktop or Android mobile devices, as well as supported Android apps. The merchant receives the virtual card number instead of the physical card number, and Amex provides a dynamic security code. This is a virtual credential, not necessarily a number that disappears after one purchase.
Enrollment involves Google, and Amex says card information and recent purchase information are shared with Google when the feature is enrolled. The feature has exclusions, so it should not be treated as an unrestricted number that works at every checkout or on every device.

Revolut U.S.: choose between single-use and multi-use prepaid debit
Revolut’s U.S. page describes virtual prepaid debit cards held in its app. Its single-use option refreshes card details after a payment, so a vendor cannot use the same details to charge again after that purchase. The page also describes a multi-use virtual card for recurring payments.
Because this is prepaid debit rather than credit, it is not a substitute for an eligible credit-card account. Confirm in the app that the feature is available to you and review the account terms that apply to your region.

Pick a number type that matches the billing pattern
One-time online purchases
For a purchase you expect to happen once, a single-use number or a card you can lock or close afterward may reduce the chance that the same details are reused for a later charge. Privacy and Revolut describe single-use behavior; Capital One describes a one-time option for eligible users. Availability and payment approval still depend on the provider, account, and merchant.
Free trials and subscriptions
A virtual card for a free trial is not automatically a reliable way to stop a subscription from billing. If the trial converts to a paid plan, the merchant may need a valid reusable credential for the next charge. A number that closes or refreshes after the first payment can cause a renewal to fail, and a failed payment does not necessarily cancel the subscription agreement. Use a reusable or merchant-specific number when you intend the service to continue, and cancel directly with the merchant if you do not want the renewal.
Recurring payments you want to manage
A merchant-specific or multi-use number can be a better fit when future payments should continue but you want a credential you can manage separately. Capital One describes merchant-specific numbers, Privacy offers merchant-locked cards, and Revolut describes a multi-use option for recurring payments. Before relying on a lock or close control, check how the provider handles recurring charges and what happens to pending transactions.
Before you sign up or enter a number
- Confirm the funding source. Privacy is linked to checking-account funds, Revolut’s U.S. virtual cards are prepaid debit, and Capital One and Amex options are connected to eligible credit-card accounts.
- Check eligibility in your actual account. Provider-wide feature descriptions do not mean every cardholder or region qualifies.
- Match the number to the checkout environment. Amex describes Chrome and Android support; Revolut describes in-app use. Capital One says merchant acceptance varies.
- Read the merchant’s billing terms. A card number does not replace cancellation, refund, or subscription procedures.
- Review current fees and controls. Availability, plan terms, device support, and pricing can change; use the provider’s current product and account information.
Why Citi is not a fifth consumer choice here
Citi’s official material describes virtual card accounts for organizational purchasing, including unique numbers and transaction controls. That is a business or commercial context. It does not establish that Citi currently offers a generally available consumer disposable-card service, so it is not comparable to the four consumer-facing options above.
