What you need before you start
- A Buy Me a Coffee creator page.
- Access to edit your website.
- A website editor with a place to add the generated embed code. Site builders differ, so the exact editor label and available options depend on your platform.
The official walkthrough, published November 28, 2024, starts in the Buy Me a Coffee dashboard. Its labels or your website editor may have changed since then.
Add a Buy Me a Coffee button
- Sign in to Buy Me a Coffee and open Buttons and Graphics in your dashboard.
- Select Generate beside Website Buttons.
- Customize the button’s color, font, emoji, and text. Choose either a simple button or a version that displays a supporter count.
- Generate the button and copy the code provided.
- In your website editor, open the page and location where you want the button to appear. Add the code using the editor’s embed or code feature, then save or publish the page.
- Open the published page and check that the button is visible and takes you to your Buy Me a Coffee page.
For example, a site builder may call its embed feature an HTML block, code block, or custom-code element. Follow your platform’s instructions for adding an embed; the Buy Me a Coffee guide does not document the steps for every website builder.
Choose a button or an on-page widget
Buy Me a Coffee describes the difference this way: “Buttons link to your page, while widgets allow supporters to donate without leaving your site.” Choose based on where you want the supporter to complete the action:

Use the widget instructions only for the widget. The guide places button code where the button should appear; it does not say to put the button code in the page head.

Buy Me a Coffee’s help article, dated March 18, 2026, says the platform charges a 5% fee per transaction. It lists Stripe payment processing at 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful transaction and a 0.5% payout processing fee. The same article also lists possible additional charges of 1% for international transactions and 0.5% for subscription payments. These are the service’s published figures and can change; check its current fee article before relying on them.

The service describes one-time support, memberships, a shop, publishing tools, and website embeds. You can begin with one-time support and add other features later. Its payout FAQ, also dated March 18, 2026, says creators can request a payout after reaching $10; the account is reviewed and funds are sent through Stripe to a bank. That is the service’s stated process, not a guaranteed payout schedule.

If the button does not appear
- Check the placement: Confirm you added the button code to the page content or embed area where you want it shown, rather than treating it like the widget code for the site head.
- Save and publish: Some editors do not display changes on the live page until you publish them.
- Check the editor’s embed support: If the editor rejects the code or removes it, consult your website platform’s instructions or support. Compatibility varies, and the Buy Me a Coffee guide does not cover every builder.
- Test the destination: Click the published button and make sure it opens the intended Buy Me a Coffee creator page.
