For a full year, Costco Executive Membership breaks even on its 2% reward when you make $3,250 in qualifying purchases. That comes from the $65 annual difference between Gold Star and Executive: $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250. This is qualifying spend—not everything you spend at Costco—and Costco says the reward is not guaranteed to equal or exceed the upgrade fee.
How much do you need to spend for Executive to pay for itself?
Costco lists Gold Star at $65 per year and Executive at $130 per year, making the full-year upgrade cost $65 before applicable sales tax. Executive earns a 2% reward on qualifying purchases. At that rate, $3,250 in qualifying purchases generates $65:
$65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250
That is about $271 per month in qualifying purchases, calculated by dividing $3,250 by 12. It is a planning equivalent, not a Costco-published monthly threshold. The annual fees and reward rate are listed in Costco’s membership and reward information; check the current terms before enrolling because fees and rules can change.
The calculation is a reward-only break-even. If qualifying purchases fall short of $3,250, the reward alone will not cover a full-year $65 upgrade fee. If you expect to use Executive-specific services or travel benefits, those may add personal value, but their worth depends on your use and is not included in this calculation.

What purchases count toward the 2% reward?
Costco describes the reward as approximately 2% of qualifying, pre-tax purchases, less refunds. Eligible purchases generally include most merchandise bought through eligible Costco warehouse registers and Costco websites in the U.S. and Canada by U.S. and Canadian residents, plus qualifying Costco Travel purchases after travel is completed. The exact rules and exclusions are set out in Costco’s Executive Rewards terms.
Examples of excluded categories listed by Costco include gasoline, Shop Cards, postage stamps, membership fees, food-court purchases, taxes, shipping, some alcohol and prescription purchases, cellphone products and service, and certain business and insurance services. Some travel-related charges are also excluded, including specified surcharges, gratuities, trip protection, third-party travel, upgrades, rental-car equipment, resort charges, and port charges. Costco says additional categories may be excluded at its discretion, so the current terms—not a broad estimate of your total Costco spending—should guide your calculation.

There is also an account rule: only purchases by the Primary Member and active Primary Household Cardholder count. Purchases by other people do not qualify under the terms. Refunds reduce eligible purchase totals.
Does the timing of an upgrade change the calculation?
Yes. Costco prorates the upgrade amount based on the months remaining in the membership year, but purchases made before the upgrade do not qualify for the Executive reward. For a midyear upgrade, compare the prorated fee with the qualifying purchases you realistically expect to make after upgrading; do not use the full-year $3,250 threshold as if all of that spending were still ahead of you.

At renewal, assess the next full membership year against the $65 annual difference and your expected qualifying spend. Costco also states that the reward is not guaranteed to equal or exceed the upgrade fee and limits a household or business to one Executive membership. How large can the reward be?
Costco caps the annual reward at $1,250. At a flat 2% rate, reaching that cap corresponds arithmetically to $62,500 in qualifying purchases before the cap applies; that spending figure is calculated from the stated rate and cap, not separately published by Costco. Most members weighing the upgrade will be deciding whether their spending clears the much lower $3,250 break-even point.

Can Executive benefits make the upgrade worthwhile below $3,250?
Possibly, if you personally use benefits that matter to you. Costco identifies additional discounts on select Costco Services and extra benefits on select Costco Travel products. Its customer-service information also describes offerings such as earlier shopping hours, lower prices on check printing and auto buying, roadside assistance for vehicles covered through its Auto Insurance program, travel benefits, and Instacart savings. Availability and value can depend on location, service, enrollment, and offer terms; Costco does not provide a single universal dollar value for them. - Estimate qualifying purchases for the year. Exclude categories Costco does not count, and do not include purchases made by people other than the Primary Member or active Primary Household Cardholder.
- Compare the estimate with $3,250. For a full year at the listed fees, this is the calculated qualifying-spend point where a 2% reward matches the $65 upgrade difference.
- Adjust for a midyear upgrade. Use the prorated fee and only the qualifying purchases you expect after upgrading.
- Value other benefits separately. Count a service or travel benefit only if you expect to use it and can reasonably estimate its personal value; do not treat it as guaranteed cash back.
- Keep other rewards separate. A credit-card reward is governed by a different program and should not be confused with Costco’s Executive reward.
Costco may change fees, eligible categories, offers, or reward terms. Review its current membership and Executive Rewards terms before making the decision.
