Use a resignation letter to state clearly that you are leaving and when you expect your employment to end. Do not use it as a substitute for notifying your employer about maternity leave or maternity pay: those are separate processes, and their deadlines depend on your location and circumstances.
Choose the sample that matches your timing
These drafting examples are not official forms or legal advice. Before inserting a final date, check the notice period that applies under local law and your contract or workplace agreement. If you want to leave earlier than that period, ask whether your employer will agree to a shorter one; do not assume you can require it.
Resigning during pregnancy, before maternity leave
Use this when you are giving notice while still working and have checked the applicable notice period.
Dear [manager’s name],
Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my role as [job title] at [employer]. In line with my applicable notice period, I expect my last day of employment to be [date]. Please confirm receipt and let me know the arrangements for my final pay and any accrued leave.

Resigning before maternity leave begins
If you have decided to resign before leave starts, you can use the first sample. If you have not decided to resign and instead intend to take leave, notify your employer through the applicable maternity-leave process. A resignation letter does not give maternity-leave notice or claim maternity pay.
Resigning while on maternity leave
Use this version if you have already started leave and are now giving notice. Check how the notice period applies to your employment and any leave or benefit arrangements before sending it.

Resigning after maternity leave
The same sample works if you have returned from leave and are resigning afterward. Replace the bracketed date only after checking your notice requirements, and ask your employer to confirm the final day in writing.

What to check before sending a resignation letter
- Notice period: Check your written employment terms and any applicable law or workplace agreement. Acas says UK workers should find the notice requirement in their written employment particulars; in Australia, the Fair Work Ombudsman says an award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract may set it.
- Final date: State the date you expect employment to end, rather than only saying you are resigning. Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman recommends written notice as best practice and says to include the last day of employment.
- Written record: Keep a copy and ask for confirmation of receipt. Acas says UK workers do not have to resign in writing, but notes that they can ask for written confirmation or use recorded delivery to establish receipt.
- Pay, leave, and benefits: Before resigning, check how the decision could affect final pay, accrued leave, maternity pay, or other benefits. Do not assume that resignation leaves every entitlement unchanged.
- Personal details: You generally do not need to explain your personal reasons in the letter. Keep the wording professional and focused on your role, notice, last day, and handover.
Keep maternity-leave and resignation notices separate
In the UK, maternity-leave notification and Statutory Maternity Pay notification have their own requirements. GOV.UK says to notify the employer of maternity leave at least 15 weeks before the due date, giving the expected due date and intended leave start. For Statutory Maternity Pay, it says to give at least 28 days’ notice of the intended pay start date and provide proof of pregnancy. These are UK-specific requirements; check the current official guidance for your circumstances.
Acas says UK statutory maternity leave can last up to 52 weeks and may start as early as the 11th week before the due date. If you are considering resigning instead of returning, check how leaving affects your rights and benefits before choosing a date.
Rules differ by location
The following are specific examples, not rules that apply everywhere. Employment status, contract terms, service duration, and benefit eligibility can change the outcome. Confirm current local requirements before sending a letter.

France
France’s Service Public page, verified 16 May 2025, says an employee may resign during pregnancy without working notice and without owing compensation for unworked notice. It recommends written notification to avoid disputes and notes that accrued paid-leave compensation may apply. It also says someone who resigns during pregnancy does not have the right to reinstatement at the end of maternity leave. See the Service Public guidance on resignation during pregnancy.
Australia
The Fair Work Ombudsman says notice may be required and may be set by an award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract. Its resignation template and guidance recommend giving written notice as best practice and including the final day of employment.
Ontario, Canada
The Government of Ontario’s Employment Standards Act guide says an employee who wants to resign before or at the end of pregnancy leave must give at least four weeks’ written notice. This applies to the Ontario situations described in the guide; verify the current law and your circumstances. See the Ontario pregnancy and parental leave guide.

Singapore
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower says maternity protection against retrenchment or dismissal without sufficient cause applies to qualifying employees who have worked at least three months and were certified pregnant before receiving the notice. It also says an employer commits an offence by dismissing an employee while she is on maternity leave. These protections are specific to Singapore; see the Ministry of Manpower maternity-protection guidance.
United States
The U.S. Department of Labor explains that the Pregnancy Discrimination Act treats discrimination because of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions as sex discrimination under Title VII. This is not a resignation-notice rule. Check federal, state, and local leave and benefit rules separately. See the Department of Labor pregnancy-discrimination guidance.

In Australia, use the Fair Work Ombudsman’s template linked above. If resigning may affect a benefit or return-to-work right, check with the relevant government service or a qualified local adviser before submitting notice.
