In a PerthNow profile published on 29 August 2021, Melanie Wood described leaving office administration at 45 for gold-mine work near Leonora in Western Australia’s Goldfields. The move brought a sudden setback when the site shut down about a week after she arrived. Rather than head home, she stayed, lived on savings and learned about mining. The profile later described her running a small mine site and taking on a range of practical jobs.
Why Wood left office work
Wood had worked as an administration assistant at a strata management company. She told PerthNow that she felt stuck and wanted a challenge: “I just felt stuck, I craved adventure and wanted to do something way out of my comfort zone.” At 45, she moved from Perth to a mining role near Leonora, around 900 kilometres away.
The profile framed the change as a dramatic career pivot, but it did not provide a full account of her hiring process, qualifications, contract terms or the costs involved in making the move. It is therefore a personal story, not a step-by-step route into mining.
What happened when the mine shut down
According to the 2021 account, the site shut down indefinitely about a week after Wood arrived, in connection with COVID-19 lockdowns. She chose to stay in the area, support herself from savings and learn as much as she could about gold mining. She recalled: “Instead of going home with my tail between my legs I decided to stay, live off my savings and learn everything I could about gold mining.”

The conditions she described were basic: she slept outdoors in a swag beneath a wooden pergola and showered under a hose. That detail illustrates the uncertainty and discomfort in her account; it is not a recommendation about accommodation or equipment for FIFO workers.
How her mining work developed
PerthNow later described Wood as running a small mine site and working across several hands-on and equipment-related tasks. The profile listed welding, driving a loader, operating an excavator and servicing equipment. It presents a progression from office administration into a varied mining role, rather than a single job with a fixed set of duties.

Wood also described an ambition to grow her business, hire more women and acquire additional mining leases. In the article, she said: “I plan to hire more women up here as I build my business and my goal is to purchase more leases to mine.” Those were her stated goals in 2021; the profile does not establish which plans were subsequently achieved.
What “literally struck gold” does—and does not—mean
The headline’s phrase captures the story’s connection to gold mining, but the article’s more useful takeaway is the career change and the persistence Wood showed after an early shutdown. Its six-figure salary framing is a claim in that dated profile, not independently verified pay information. The article provides no salary records, detailed compensation breakdown or evidence that FIFO work generally pays that amount.
