Labubu’s Australian appeal combines a distinctive character, social-media visibility and the surprise of opening a blind box. That can make collecting exciting—and make it harder to predict what a run of purchases will cost. Australian reports include individual spending stories, but they do not establish a national total or show how many Australians collect Labubu. Buyers weighing a purchase should consider the uncertainty of a blind box, the full cost of repeated attempts and the risk of counterfeit dolls.
What Labubu is—and why it is suddenly so visible
Labubu is a character created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung as part of The Monsters series. Pop Mart became its commercial toy partner in 2019. The character’s visibility has grown alongside the popularity of collectible figures and plush products sold in sealed, randomized packages.
In June 2025, ABC News interviewed Australian buyers who described discovering Labubu through social media and feeling drawn to a trend they saw others joining. One 13-year-old told ABC: “I was finally hopping on the trend that was all over social media.” That is one young buyer’s account, not evidence of how all collectors discover the character. Renata Yannoulis, advertising strategy director at TBWA Australia, told ABC: “People think they’re [blind boxes] quite new but they’re definitely not; they’re just having a really big moment in pop culture.” ABC News, 5 June 2025
How blind boxes can turn a purchase into a repeat attempt
A blind box is a sealed package containing one randomly selected item from a collection. Buyers may know the series but not which figure is inside until they open it. That uncertainty is part of the appeal: the reveal can be satisfying when the figure is wanted, or disappointing when it is not.

ABC’s interviews describe luck, scarcity and the social experience of unboxing as factors that can make collecting compelling. Watching other people reveal a figure can provide some of the excitement and prompt viewers to try buying one themselves. These are reported ways the trend can work, not a universal explanation for every buyer.
In an ABC 7.30 report published on 25 August 2025, the boxes discussed showed odds of one in 144 for a secret figure. That number applies to the product context covered in that report; it should not be treated as the odds for every Labubu release. The report also quotes consumer psychologist Dr Christina Anthony comparing blind-box collecting to “an emotional lottery similar to what gamblers experience when they’re chasing the next win.” The comparison describes a possible emotional mechanism; it is not a diagnosis of collectors or evidence that collecting is inherently addictive. What Australian spending stories do—and do not—show
ABC’s reporting includes one collector’s estimate that he had spent close to A$1,600 on Labubus. That was his personal estimate, reported on 25 August 2025, not an average or a representative measure of Australian spending. Another interviewee described feeling disappointed after missing the figure she wanted. A 13-year-old interviewed by ABC in June put the uncertainty this way: “I feel like I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t get the ones that I wanted but like I feel that’s kind of on me because it’s like a little mystery.” These accounts illustrate individual experiences; they do not establish how common those experiences are.
There is no representative Australian ownership survey or national Labubu spending total in the cited reporting. Pop Mart’s company results provide a different kind of context: the Associated Press reported revenue of 37.1 billion yuan in 2025, up 185% year over year, and said The Monsters—the intellectual property that includes Labubu—accounted for about 38% of company revenue. Those are global company-level figures, not Australian sales or household spending. Associated Press, 25 March 2026

How to judge a Labubu purchase before paying
A buyer can make the trade-offs clearer by comparing a blind box with a known figure and by checking the seller before spending. There is no comprehensive current Australian price survey in the cited sources, so a price comparison should be made against the specific listing and edition being considered.
| What to compare | Blind box | Known figure |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | A random figure from the stated collection; the exact item is unknown before opening. | The listing identifies the figure you intend to buy. |
| Cost exposure | Repeated purchases may be needed to find a preferred figure; the total depends on how many boxes are bought. | You pay for a specific item, but the sources provide no current comprehensive price comparison. |
| Seller and authenticity | Check the seller and product details; a sealed box alone does not establish authenticity. | Check the seller and edition claims before paying, especially if the listing is unfamiliar. |
| Scarcity and resale | A rare or secret figure may be part of a series, but the sources do not establish current Australian availability or resale premiums. | A specific listing may reduce uncertainty about the figure, but it does not by itself verify authenticity or value. |
Pop Mart Australia’s live storefront lists The Monsters products, including plush and pendant categories, but its listing does not confirm the current stock or price of a particular Labubu model. How to reduce the risk of buying a counterfeit
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Product Safety Australia page warns that fake Labubu dolls, often called “Lafufus,” are circulating. It describes genuine Labubu products as Pop Mart plush collectibles, including larger plush toys and smaller key-chain versions. The warning is a reason to check the seller and the exact product carefully; it does not establish that every marketplace listing is fake or that any particular seller is authorized.
- Check who is selling the item, not just the marketplace hosting the listing.
- Read the listing for the exact character, edition and product type, and compare those details with current manufacturer information.
- Be cautious when authenticity claims cannot be substantiated. Packaging or a low price alone should not be treated as proof.
- Consult current ACCC guidance if you are unsure what to look for or suspect a counterfeit.

Why the trend matters to a personal budget
Blind-box collecting combines an uncertain result with the possibility of wanting another attempt. That can make it useful to set a spending limit before buying, rather than deciding after each reveal whether to continue. A simple budget check is to ask what the maximum total would be if the preferred figure does not appear, and whether that amount still fits alongside essentials and other goals.
Social visibility can also influence what feels worth buying. ANZ Bluenotes describes the “bandwagon” effect as following what others are doing because it seems that everyone else is doing it. That is a general behavioral explanation, not a Labubu-specific clinical finding. ANZ Bluenotes, 6 August 2025
