The best-documented examples are different from one another: Larry Ellison-controlled entities own nearly all of inhabited Lānaʻi, Richard Branson is associated with Necker Island and a homeowner community on Moskito, and David Copperfield is named as owner of a private-island resort in the Bahamas. Mark Zuckerberg’s reported holdings are acreage on Kauaʻi—not the island itself—and Johnny Depp’s often-cited island purchase is historical, not proof of current ownership.
Why “eight private-island billionaires” is not a reliable list
“Private island” can mean an entire island held by one owner, most privately held land on an inhabited island, a home on an island, or a resort marketed for exclusive stays. Those are not equivalent forms of ownership. The available evidence supports several notable cases, but it does not establish eight people who are both billionaires and current owners of private islands. Rather than treat resorts, large mainland-style landholdings, or old purchases as interchangeable, the examples below distinguish what is documented.
The strongest island-scale example: Larry Ellison and Lānaʻi
Lānaʻi is an inhabited Hawaiian island, not an unpopulated private retreat. A 2025 report from Hawaiʻi’s Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism states: “With the exception of just over 800 acres of government land, Lanai is entirely owned by entities controlled by a single investor, Larry Ellison.” The report therefore describes control of nearly all non-government land through Ellison-controlled entities—not personal ownership of every acre or of the island’s government land. Read the Hawaiʻi property-ownership report (2025).
The same report says that private owners with holdings of at least 1,000 acres account for 33.2% of statewide acreage in its analysis. That figure describes a category of large landholders across Hawaiʻi; it is not Ellison’s share of the state. Bloomberg’s reporting adds context about Lānaʻi’s residents, economy, and tourism, important considerations when describing ownership of an inhabited place. Bloomberg’s reporting on Ellison and Lānaʻi (2022).

Richard Branson: a private-island stay and a homeowner community
Necker Island, British Virgin Islands
Virgin Limited Edition describes Necker Island as “home to Sir Richard Branson” and operates it as an all-inclusive private-island stay. The operator lists the main accommodation for up to 48 guests, with additional rooms extending capacity to 56 guests plus 14 children. These are operator-published capacities, not a guarantee of availability or an independently verified measure of ownership. Virgin Limited Edition’s Necker Island page.
Moskito Island, British Virgin Islands
Moskito is not simply another name for a single-owner private retreat. Its official FAQ says Branson acquired the island in 2007 and invited founding homeowners; it describes four estates available for exclusive private stays among individually owned homes. That makes it a private homeowner community with stay accommodations, rather than evidence that Branson owns every home or the whole island today. Moskito Island’s official FAQ.

David Copperfield and Musha Cay in the Bahamas
The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s 2024 hotel directory identifies David Copperfield as the owner of Musha Cay and the Islands of Copperfield Bay, classifying the property as a private island and listing a 12-room luxury resort. This supports describing it as an owner-named private-island resort; it does not establish that the island operates as a private residence alone. The directory is an official, dated classification, so it is stronger evidence for the resort’s status than undated retellings of old purchase prices or capacity claims. Bahamas Ministry of Tourism hotel directory (2024).
Mark Zuckerberg’s Kauaʻi holdings are not an island purchase
WIRED reports that Zuckerberg initially bought 700 acres on Kauaʻi in 2014 and later added land to a ranch and compound. Those are reported acreage figures for property on a Hawaiian island; they do not mean he owns Kauaʻi. The reporting also discusses lawsuits involving kuleana rights—small parcels with historic land claims—and local questions around the development. WIRED’s 2025 report on the Kauaʻi compound.

Johnny Depp’s Little Hall’s Pond Cay: a historical claim, not current proof
A 2012 Forbes profile reported that Depp bought Little Hall’s Pond Cay, in the Bahamas, in 2004, and described it as 45 acres. That source documents a historical report about a purchase; it does not verify that Depp still owns the property. It should not be presented as a current billionaire-owned island without newer evidence of both ownership and billionaire status. Forbes’s 2012 profile of Little Hall’s Pond Cay.
How the examples differ
| Person or property | What the evidence establishes | Geography and use | Evidence date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Larry Ellison / Lānaʻi | Entities controlled by Ellison own the island’s land except just over 800 government acres, according to the state report. | Inhabited Hawaiian island; land ownership and tourism affect a resident community. | Hawaiʻi state report, 2025; Bloomberg context, 2022. |
| Richard Branson / Necker | Virgin Limited Edition describes the island as Branson’s home and an all-inclusive private-island stay. | British Virgin Islands; private-stay property. | Official operator page accessed October 8, 2026. |
| Richard Branson / Moskito | Island acquired by Branson in 2007; official FAQ describes individually owned homes and four estates available for exclusive stays. | British Virgin Islands; homeowner community and private stays. | Official FAQ accessed October 8, 2026. |
| David Copperfield / Musha Cay | Bahamas tourism directory names Copperfield as owner and lists a 12-room private-island resort. | Bahamas; luxury resort. | Ministry of Tourism directory, 2024. |
| Mark Zuckerberg / Kauaʻi | WIRED reports acreage purchases and a ranch/compound, not ownership of Kauaʻi. | Hawaiʻi; landholding and compound on an inhabited island. | WIRED, 2025; initial purchase reported as 2014. |
| Johnny Depp / Little Hall’s Pond Cay | Forbes reported a 45-acre property and a 2004 purchase; current ownership is not established by that report. | Bahamas; use not established here. | Forbes, 2012. |
What “private island” does—and does not—tell you
The label alone does not tell you whether a celebrity owns the entire island, a company owns land there, guests can book a stay, or other homeowners hold their own properties. For a meaningful comparison, check the owner named in a dated government or operator source, the scope of the property, whether it is inhabited, and whether the source describes current ownership or only a past purchase. The evidence here documents several remarkable holdings and properties, but not eight verified current billionaire island owners.
