Draken International operates military-style aircraft for contracted training—not as private leisure jets. Its pilots fly opposing-force missions, often called “Red Air,” so military aircrews can practice against simulated adversaries. The phrase “privately owned fighter jets” describes who operates some of these aircraft, not a claim that they are available for private purchase or routinely armed.
Why does a private company operate fighter jets?
Military units need realistic opposition when they train. Rather than rely only on their own personnel and aircraft to play the adversary, they can contract specialist pilots to simulate hostile tactics. Draken describes this service as live Red Air: its pilots act as the opposing force while customer aircrews train as “Blue,” or the friendly force. That is the company’s explanation of its service; it is not independent proof of a particular training outcome.
The UK Ministry of Defence described its 2025 training contract as preparing forces for scenarios including air-to-air combat, missile attacks and attacks on ships from aircraft. The exercises use private pilots to replicate adversary tactics over the North Sea. The contract also covers electronic-warfare training and airborne reconnaissance and intelligence support for Army personnel.
Draken says its air-domain services combine live, virtual and constructive (LVC) training with secure data connectivity, and that it operates under required civil and military approvals. These are company descriptions of its capabilities and operating framework.

How Draken International developed
Draken was established in Lakeland, Florida, in 2011. Its company history says it was founded to meet demand for privately contracted adversary-air services, with early aircraft purchases including A-4K Skyhawks and MB339s. The A-4 connection explains why the company appears in discussions of privately operated fighter aircraft, but its stated purpose is contracted training.
- 2015: Draken says its A-4K aircraft flew its first contracted close-air-support event for the U.S. Marine Corps, followed by its first adversary-air event at Northern Lightning.
- 2019: Draken’s history records that Blackstone acquired a majority interest in the company.
- 2020: Draken says it acquired Cobham Aviation Services, including FR Aviation Ltd, bringing its U.S. Red Air work together with a UK live electronic-warfare training heritage.
- 2022: Draken says it won the UK Interim Red Air Aggressor Training Service (IRAATS) contract. The company records the first sortie in the North Sea training area in December of that year.
These milestones are drawn from Draken’s company history. The history also reports a $280 million U.S. Air Force training-contract award in 2018; that is a historical company-reported contract value, not a current contract figure.

What the 2025 UK contract says about its aircraft
On 29 January 2025, the UK Ministry of Defence announced a £173 million Draken training contract. Its release specified the following aircraft for the contract, based at Teesside and Bournemouth. This is the announced UK contract fleet, not a complete or current worldwide Draken fleet total.
| Aircraft in the UK announcement | Quantity | What the announcement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Dassault Falcon 20 | 14 | Included in the fleet specified for delivery of the announced training contract; the release does not give a detailed aircraft-by-aircraft task allocation. |
| Diamond DA42 | 1 | Included in the specified contract fleet; the release does not give a detailed aircraft-by-aircraft task allocation. |
| L-159E “Honey Badger” | 8 | Included in the specified contract fleet for the training service; the release does not give a detailed aircraft-by-aircraft task allocation. |
The government described training against air combat, missile and ship-attack threats, along with electronic-warfare training and airborne reconnaissance and intelligence support. It also said the deal would support more than 200 UK jobs and that Draken would enrol a minimum of 12 apprentices at both sites. Those figures and the contract value belong to the Ministry of Defence’s announcement, rather than describing Draken as a whole. See the UK Ministry of Defence announcement.

The announcement is dated 29 January 2025; it establishes what the government announced at that time, not the contract’s status or terms after that date. It quotes Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry Maria Eagle MP calling the investment “world-class training” and a boost to business, jobs and national security; Air Officer Commanding 1 Group Air Vice Marshal Mark Flewin describing the partnership as important to preparing forces for emerging threats; and Draken CEO Nic Anderson saying the company was proud to continue serving the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Army. These are attributed stakeholder views, not independently measured findings.

In this context, “private” distinguishes a contractor from a military service operating its own aircraft. It does not by itself establish that the jets are privately purchasable, used for leisure, or armed during training. The available company and government descriptions concern training services, aircraft assigned to a particular announced contract, and military or civil operating approvals—not private consumer ownership or weapons configuration.
Nor does the UK aircraft list reveal Draken’s total fleet. It is limited to the aircraft specified for one UK contract announcement, and the government release does not assign a detailed role to each listed platform. Draken’s history and service pages likewise do not establish a complete present-day worldwide fleet total or independently evaluated training-effectiveness statistics.
