Who Are the Richest Oil Tycoons? A Dated Ranking—and Why a Reliable Top 10 Is Hard to Verify

Available 2026 Forbes snapshots show five major oil-and-gas-related fortunes, but differing dates and business sources do not support a reliable top 10.

There is no defensible, consistently sourced top 10 of the richest oil tycoons in the available figures as of October 8, 2026. The estimates below are Forbes U.S.-dollar snapshots from September 10 or 15, 2026—not one synchronized ranking—and several fortunes come from diversified businesses or energy infrastructure rather than oil production alone. The list is therefore a transparent comparison of five oil-and-gas-related fortunes, not a claim that these are the five richest or a complete top 10.

What counts as an oil tycoon?

“Oil tycoon” is not a standardized category in the wealth rankings cited here. A narrow definition would include people whose fortunes chiefly come from producing oil. A broader oil-and-gas definition can also include pipeline owners and diversified companies with substantial energy businesses. Those are materially different exposures: producing oil is not the same business as transporting it, and neither necessarily accounts for all of a billionaire’s wealth.

To make the comparison useful without pretending the categories are interchangeable, the table includes oil-and-gas producers, a diversified conglomerate founder, and pipeline magnates. It labels each fortune’s connection to the sector. Forbes’ estimates are in U.S. dollars and come from individual profile snapshots dated September 10 or 15, 2026. Because those dates differ, the amounts do not establish a same-day order.

What the available estimates show

Person or family Estimated net worth Estimate date Connection to oil and gas
Mukesh Ambani $88 billion September 10, 2026 Diversified Reliance Industries, with interests including oil and gas, petrochemicals, telecom, retail, media, and financial services. This is not a pure oil fortune.
Harold Hamm & family $19 billion September 15, 2026 Oil-and-gas founder of Continental Resources. The company was taken private in 2022, and ownership was divided among his children; the estimate should not be read as Hamm’s sole holdings.
Jeffery Hildebrand $14.7 billion September 10, 2026 Oil-and-gas producer through closely held Hilcorp. Bloomberg reports Hilcorp produced about 367,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025.
Richard Kinder $12.7 billion September 10, 2026 Wealth tied to Kinder Morgan, an oil-and-gas pipeline company; this is infrastructure exposure, not primarily upstream production.
Kelcy Warren $9.4 billion September 10, 2026 Wealth tied to Energy Transfer, a major oil and natural gas pipeline company; this is also an infrastructure fortune.

Sources for the estimates and descriptions: Forbes on Mukesh Ambani, Forbes on Harold Hamm & family, Forbes on Jeffery Hildebrand, Forbes on Richard Kinder, and Forbes on Kelcy Warren. Hilcorp’s 2025 production figure is from Bloomberg’s Jeffery Hildebrand profile.

Why this is not a verified top 10

The available Forbes figures identify five relevant fortunes, but they do not provide a complete, consistently defined top 10 for October 8, 2026. Filling five more places from estimates that use different dates or definitions would create a ranking that looks more certain than the evidence allows. A 2025 roundup of the richest people in energy is broader than oil: it covers oil, gas, renewables, and power, so it cannot supply missing places in an oil-tycoon list.

Wealth estimates also change over time. Bloomberg says its Billionaires Index is updated each business day and values public-company stakes using recent closing prices before converting them to U.S. dollars at current exchange rates. Private-company values and the attribution of family or promoter-group holdings add further judgment. For Ambani, Bloomberg says the majority of his wealth comes from a 42% stake in publicly traded Reliance Industries and explains its treatment of promoter-group holdings. A profile estimate is therefore a dated estimate, not a fixed measure of cash available to spend.

For a genuinely comparable top 10, the ranking would need one provider, a common cutoff date, and an explicit rule about whether to include diversified conglomerates, pipelines, LNG, family holdings, and fortunes earned outside oil and gas.
