What do Middlesbrough’s latest accounts show?
The latest full accounts identified are for Middlesbrough Football & Athletic Company (1986) Limited for the year ended 30 June 2025. Companies House records that they were filed on 26 February 2026. Companies House filing history
BBC Sport reported the £11.4 million loss and the comparison with the £12.4 million loss in the previous 12-month period. That is a year-on-year narrowing of £1 million; it does not mean the club made a profit or that its finances are back to balance. BBC Sport’s report on the accounts
How do turnover and wages compare?
BBC Sport reported turnover of £32.5 million and wage costs of £36.4 million for the year. Wages therefore amounted to about 112% of reported turnover, before considering other costs or income. This comparison helps explain the pressure on the club’s finances, but it is not a complete calculation of the final loss: turnover, wage costs and the bottom-line result are distinct accounting measures.

The report also says broadcasting revenue rose from £9.7 million to £12.2 million, which it links to a new television deal. Meanwhile, staff costs increased from £31.4 million to £36.4 million, a reported rise of 16%. The rise in broadcast income did not prevent the club from recording a loss.
What role did player transfers play?
BBC Sport reported that Middlesbrough generated £26.4 million from player transfers, including the reported £20 million sale of Emmanuel Latte Lath to Atlanta United. It also reported £22.6 million spent on incoming players.

Those figures should not be treated as a simple £3.8 million net gain that can be subtracted from the club’s loss. Transfer proceeds and spending can be recorded differently from cash movements, and the available reporting does not establish the accounting treatment or all related costs. The transfer figures provide context, but they do not by themselves explain the reported result or establish the club’s cash position.
Who is supporting Middlesbrough financially?
BBC Sport says the accounts describe continued heavy reliance on chairman Steve Gibson for financial support. The report does not establish the amount or terms of that support, so it cannot be used to quantify what Gibson has contributed or determine the club’s full funding position.

In a statement from the directors quoted by BBC Sport, the club said it would seek to control operating costs, make as much income as possible available for the football team, and strive for progression and promotion to the Premier League. These are stated aims, not a guarantee of promotion or a verified outcome.

No conclusion about insolvency follows from the loss alone. A company can report an accounting loss without that fact, by itself, showing that it cannot meet its obligations or has breached a financial rule. The figures reported here do not establish either outcome.
